Letter: Lakewood Won the Elections

Lakewood’s recent election results mark more than just a political win — they represent a milestone in communal achdus.

For the first time in recent memory, the entire community came out with a united voice, standing firmly behind our Rabbonim and Askonim.

For the most part, as the numbers indicate, the election was not about personalities or party lines. It was about Lakewood’s values.

When the Rabbonim gave clear guidance, Lakewood listened. When our Askonim devoted countless hours to ensure every voice was heard and every ballot was cast, the people responded with unprecedented turnout.

In years past, fragmented voting often diluted Lakewood’s influence. But this time, Klal Lakewood spoke together — with respect, with clarity, and with purpose. The results showed what happens when daas Torah leads and the tzibbur follows with conviction.

The message from this election is unmistakable: when Lakewood stands united, it stands strong.

Agree 100%. I would add one more point, Lakewood voted in huge numbers, going forward it makes us a more relevant and powerful voice.

The Lakewood area voting bloc will grow more rapidly than any other NJ population due to 1) internal baby boom 2) seniors moving from NY to live near Lakewood children 3) Yidden leaving NYC 4) young couples from all over the US settling in the City of Torah. If the next election doesn’t have the anti- Trump factor, the Lakewood votes will be more significant.

Lakewood has 3 groups

  1. The ones that follow blindly for good or for bad, and rely on rabbonim that sighn papers.
  2. republicans voters which vote on values and rely on there common sense based on Rav Miller and the silent rabbinim that don’t want to make a fuss and argue with the establishment.
  3. younger voters that see the democrats who they are,and what the goals and don’t rely on the establishment. Those all vote republicans.

P.S Avi Shnall is a nice guy, and does mean well. So we all voted for him even though we don’t agree with him all the time .
I think there was achdus in all 3 groups.
if the establishment votes for a democratic governor things will split again. Not Everyone Relying on the establishment .

Can I ask you “The Retzay” why are you so against R’ Avi Schnall? Even when all the Rabbonim endorsed him?

The reason this happened is because the powers that be recommended the Republican candidate. Our oilam has become very strongly anti Democrats and we were happy to go along with the recommendations. However, the days when everyone in Lakewood went along with the recommendations of the powers that be are over. I live in Lakewood for almost 50 years and I used to just vote for whoever the Vaad recommended. Since I’ve seen what has happened to our once beautiful town, I make my own decisions and don’t trust anyone else’s recommendations.

Lakewood was statistically insignificant this election, Jack won Ocean county by less this than 2021. the real story is black and brown voters voting democrat, NJ is just getting more extreme. Like in NY they hated Cuomo but then begged for Cuomo brings the Tochacha to mind.
By night they wish it was day and by day they wished it was the previous night.

“NJ is just getting more extreme”, really? Mikie was endorsed by AIPAC in her US House primary last year and attacked for that and for generally being too centrist by the left, but she still won the crowded Democratic primary for governor. Jack refused to criticize Trump on any issue, which hurt him after the Big Beautiful Bill cuts and after Trump cut funding for the Gateway project. Besides, it’s common for the NJ governor race to be won by the candidate who’s the opposite party of the president. In that sense Murphy’s second term win in 2021 was a bigger anomaly than Sherrill’s win last week.

Mikie Sherrill isn’t that different policy-wise from Phil Murphy, who the Vaad endorsed in his race against Jack Ciattarelli in 2021. The main difference is that Jack promised vouchers, and Mikie didn’t.

Sorry, but state wide despite the Lakewood turn out, the Lakewood voters accomplished nothing thereby showing that we really aren’t as powerful as we’d like to think we are and that our votes don’t really matter.
