Letter: Lakewood bus driver suddenly became unresponsive, baffling doctors; His family desperately needs our help

Uri, a 36-year-old Lakewood school bus driver and Daf Yomi Magid Shiur (2x bavli 1x yerushalmi) suddenly became unresponsive five weeks ago (catatonic coma-like) with no definitive diagnostic reasoning. For almost three weeks, he was totally unresponsive. No sensation to pain. No response to anything. Doctors are baffled. All regular tests were normal. Uri was transferred 2 times and it was at the 3rd hospital he was in when he finally awoke nearly three weeks later.

Uri was released to his home for some reason. It made no sense. URI has short term memory, difficult to talk or walk, dysphasia (swallowing of whole foods), no feeling on one side of his face, impartial paralyzation of his left side (arm and leg), extremely fatigued and weak. Home OT and PT evaluations detailed the above and were shocked he was sent home so quickly. Uri belonged in an acute rehab facility which the insurance company expectantly denied.

Just last week Wednesday, Uri was rushed to a hospital (4th one in 5 weeks) as he was starting to have difficulty waking up and new pain among the ongoing medical problems that were not improving since his release. By the time he arrived to the new hospital he was once again in a catatonic coma like state for 15 hours straight- no response to any stimulation or pain. Again he started awakening but now with even worse short term memory issues on top of the other medical issues. While in the ER he again went back into catatonic state and then again short term memory. The Doctors are once again baffled and not sure what is truly going on. Many opinions no answers.

This time the hospital is NOT IN NETWORK, but there is no choice. WHAT’S THE REAL CAUSE?? IT’S 5 weeks and 4 hospitals.

Nothing on the regular battery of tests can give a 100% reason. Cocktails of different medicines are being tried. Additional diagnostic testing is being requested.

Before this they were barely making ends meet, due to the loss a few months ago of Uri’s full time job. On top of it all Uri recently lost his father.

It was difficult before, but now it’s beyond comprehension.

Vehicles were repossessed, utilities and rent were behind several months and the tremendous cost of medical insurance, medical costs and daily expenses are building up daily.
