Letter: I Got Scammed Out of $1,500

I want to let people know that I just got scammed out of $1,500 from a caller who called from a TD bank phone number.

They sent verifications from TD and it seemed like it was really the bank.

They called saying that there was fraud on my account and that they need to verify information and freeze my account.

They asked for the login info and other personal info, and unfortunately I fell for it.

I just want to let people know that scammers can call as if they are the bank and that you should be very careful. If the bank calls, always say you will call them back.

  1. I’m sorry you had to go through that.
I once got 2 missed calls in an hour from the same number. They left a voicemail, a recorded message saying that it was from Chase Fraud department that there was fraud on my account and to call back that number. I called it back and it said thank you for calling chase. I was apprehensive so I called the real number for chase. They said they did not call and there is no suspicious activity on my account so thank you for verifying.
These scams do exist and everyone should be aware

  2. You should have hung up and called your bank or went in person. Never give info over the phone. Its too easy to spoof phone numbers. Sorry that happened to you.

  3. never ever give out login info to anyone, the legitimate bank or company will NEVER ask for,
how many more need to get burnt until ppl learn this self understood policy

    • Just because you have seen an awareness campaign, or have heard from somebody to whom something like this has happened, does not mean that everybody else is aware of it.
Especially with how insular our community is, there are many people that are not aware of such information.
Additionally, the scams keep evolving to the point we’re even seasoned public figures and attorneys are falling for some of the newest scams.
