I am writing because this seems to be getting advantageous by the grocery stores.
Up until the plastic bag ban, when opting for free delivery, the boxes were supplied by the stores at no extra charge. However post the ban, presumably since the majority of shoppers would rather have their groceries packed in boxes vs. their own reusable bags, the groceries began charging per box. Which may be fine.
However, what is not fine, is that when the groceries did not charge for the boxes, the boxes would come full to capacity. But now that they are charging for boxes, I’ve found many times that the boxes are coming more to the empty side. Groceries are being delivered in 5 box when they could’ve easily been packed in 2 or 3.
Although this may seem insignificant, this quickly adds up coupled with the fact that all the items are marked up as well.
It would be a tremendous help if the managers can create such awareness among their team.
Thank you

Many ppl prefer boxes, but baggers are afraid to make the boxes too heavy for them to carry.. in addition,, retail pricesare calculated based on the cost of the items and additional overhead such as rent, utilities, taxes and wages of employees. Costs have been rising. Eggs are at an unprecedented high. Minimum wage is going up again January 1st. Employees are demanding wage raises that are unsustainable. So the prices have to go up. Finished.
eggs are half the price in no jewish stores. they have different chickens?
In ShopRite, Howell, last week, eggs were more than $6.00@ dozen! More than any haimish store, that I shop. I go there occasionally to get hard to find locally products and price checked the eggs.
Eggs here left of the Mississippi are still $2.99 a dozen with frequent sales. I cannot afford the inflated prices in Jewish grocery stores.
Way to say ‘I didn’t read the article’ without saying I didn’t read the article.
Prices can go up, but why can’t they fill the boxes? Since the bag ban they suddenly became scared of full boxes?!
Stop being so freaking lazy and go shopping your self.
These stores have to hire extra ppl to go shopping for YOU. That costs money
Boxes cost money. Ppl would complain whem items get crushed or broken from being over packed on boxes. They get to heavy to carry and the handles break while carrying which might cause the workers to drop the boxes.
Almost never are these workers given TIPS for Carrying these heavy boxes up the stairs and into your kitchen.
THIS IS A SERVICE THE GROCERY STORES ARE PROVIDING YOU. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT. GO SHOPPING YOURSELF AND PACK YOUR BOXES THE WAY YOU WANT. AND YOU SHLEP THOSE BOXES TO YOUR CAR AND LOAD THEM ONTO YOUR CAR. THAN UNLOAD THEM CARRY THEM UP ALL THISE STAIRS INTO YOUR HOUSE AND ONTO YOUR KITCHEN
till you do that pay the extra dollar or 2 so these worker don’t kill there backs from carrying YOUR food.
Have a wonderfull shabbos. And instead of complaining about the grocery stores say thank you for the convenience they are offering you.
Wow Mr. Steve you go on this nasty tirade on false pretenses, you are assuming that the writer is having all the items delivered when in fact I am assuming that she’s taking her with her but asking them to box it, so your whole rant is null and void, next time read and try to understand it before you explode like that
Sorry Sol, but your “assumption” that the OP is shopping personally at the store and taking the boxes with her is absolutely wrong! Please read the letter again…it’s ever so clearly written: “groceries are being DELIVERED” in 5 boxes instead of 2 or 3 which would have been perfectly adequate. I surely wouldn’t characterize Steve’s observation & opinion as a “rant”… it seems perfectly civil and relevant.
Read the letter again. Writer specifically mentions free delivery
With due respect to you Steve, this writer is expressing a point of view that she feels should be addressed which by the way I happen to agree with and I’m sure many others will and some probably may not but your comments are utterly disgusting and repulsive. To me you seem like a very bitter person and that’s not a good thing… Wishing you the best!
Personally I agree with Steve.
Letter writer should directly talk to supermarket delivery managers.
Many letter writers are just complaining to a croud of complainers who join in and sympathize and complain along.
I actually think that the letters should be vetted better, but if that really bothered me and I expected change, I would email the scoop directly.
agreed! It’s ridiculous!
I clearly see this when they are doing deliveries however when you are shopping in the store and YOU are the one who needs to schlep the boxes they fill it up.
Hi, every time someone writes a letter to TLS, no matter the topic, there are certain few people and I’m sure they are frequent flyers here, that comment constantly so negatively to the writer. This is shameful. You’re hiding behind a screen and a fake name, and your toxic attitude spills out to the world. Although differences of opinions are always welcome, TLS, I think these constant harsh comments written here on letters can be filtered out. There’s not once, when a letter is written, and the writer suddenly is being negatively portrayed with harsh words when all they did was verbalize their own opinion. It’s okay to read things you don’t agree with and just scroll by. There’s no need to attack anyone for having a different opinion than you. Take a break, be nice, the world can use good people.
But to attack the “greedy supermarket “ is ok with you?
I’d like to add that when a grocery order is $300+, it’s somewhat greedy of the stores to even charge for the boxes. And to the writer exhorting people to shop themselves, it’s not always possible. Be a little sympathetic.
Look into what percentages a store makes on sale and what the average profit is.
Add in that their generally not making the standard margin and possibly breaking even on sale items.
Some stores have concessions and are making a minimal profit margin on those.
Add on the delivery costs. Van, gas, insurance and drivers and then $5-$7 for boxes.
Lots of stores have discussed charging for years on till the was a form of unity and all said they will start charging
Replying to achdus, I agree with you. Though people can argue their opinion in a classy manner rather than sounding like Steve pearl’s comment. His comment should be removed in my opinion, we as yiddim should have more class than that.
I remember back in 2020 during the beginning months of Covid, several Rabbonim spoke about the need, that we need to improve with Bain Adam LeChaveiro.
Good Shabbos and a healthy winter to everyone.
Please note that many supermarkets will allow you to bring back your boxes to reuse. Most will happily retape boxes if they’ve been collapsed. I ask for my boxes to be filled halfway to preserve the box. A box can last almost 3 months. This obviously will not work for those who make orders, but can be a big cost-saver for those who shop in person.
Fyi: a box two years ago cost less than $.90. It is now over $1.30 wholesale
While this is very annoying I advise you to go directly to the manager of that specific store (or stores) instead.
Which will be way more helpful and efficient then posting this over here.
The supermarkets need more compotition. I am willing to open a few all around town. Just need a good investor. U can contact me through Scoop.
We have always been packing box’s to not so heavy. With some customers wanting everything that can fit and some that dont want it tio be heavy and most orders going through delivery the boxes will weigh to much for the drivers to bring them up a flight or 2
Unfortunately there no way to win here.
Thank you for a nice kind comment.
Hashem should bless your entire family with lots of good health.
Wishing everyone a healthy winter.
I do not shop boxes but I do know that in Gourmet Glatt north as soon as the reusable bags came around the workers started packing them as tightly as possible presumably to save the shoppers from paying for more bags than necessary. It would be hard for me to believe they are purposefully packing boxes less than capacity. Try speaking to the managers most of the stores here in town have amazing managers and “head staff” just be courteous not attacking and you will get an eye opening in to their ridiculous expenses that they did not have a year ago just like you…
stolen elections have consequences – like absurd and arbitrary laws such as plastic bag and straw bans, tax increases to redistribute your money involuntarily, etc.
at what point are we going to turn away the free-cheese and demand a government that doesn’t serve itself and works for us?
I had the same issue when I was shopping in the store, not a home delivery. I had about 15 items and they couldn’t fit it into one box. I nicely took the baggers place and repacked the box myself.
