Letter: Carpool Chaos: Does Early Dismissal Actually Help Anyone?

This woman, like me, must have finished the entire Tehillim during gridlock carpool.

Between 3:45 and 5:15, shouldn’t mothers be home in their kitchens with their preschoolers? Instead, we’re all stuck on the road, saying Tehillim.

Can we make a poll asking who actually thinks early dismissal without transportation benefits anyone? Did anyone manage to light on time after spending over an hour picking up children from multiple locations around Lakewood?

What are the solutions?

  • Finish school at the regular time with transportation. Carpool is not getting anyone home earlier.
  • Have mesivta boys light in yeshiva. The back-and-forth isn’t normal, and it would likely remove at least a third of the cars from the road.

Any other ideas?

Early dismissal does nothing but cause chaos for everyone. Sitting in gridlock traffic you end up getting home the same time. Keep regular dismissal

You are 100% right. The schools CAN try to make this more practical. The number one consideration in Lakewood always should be bussing and traffic. Think of that first before any early dismissals, late starts, off days …. This year for example vacation should have been Thursday instead of Monday since Monday is no candle lighting. Go practical. We CAN make a change from what was done 20 years ago. When schools make the calendar they should first look at the transportation schedule

I don’t think you should be taking pictures of other drivers like that. It is creepy.

What about the schools in residential neighborhoods where the roads are not made for that type of traffic……..Disaster!

Okay, Fine: I'll admit.

It’s because of the shaitels….

Everything, all the schedule and schools and babysitters and busses run around the BMG schedule. Day cares end at a “random” time to accommodate the Yeshiva schedule.

In addition, there are not enough busses for both girls and boys; Girls end early so that boys (after starting their day at 8am or earlier) can have their own bussing. The road can’t accommodate having girls and boys bussing at the same time, either. As it is, we all know how backed up Route 9 gets already.

Finally, early dismissal means that hundreds or maybe even thousands of students are all getting out at the same time, and each kid goes in their own van.

So it’s not about the bussing, per se.

Why would you attempt to make לצנות out of something we all know is an issue that brings a חרון אף ר״ל.

A letter recently went out signed by a list of true Torah leaders addressing this very point.

The Mesilas Yesharim writes there are 3 main elements that impede the first part of Yiddishkeit, זהירות. One of them is לצנות.

It is safe to say- those like yourself who spew Litzanus have a long way to go in the department of זהירות…..Shmiras Eiynayim and Tznius are part of זהירות, surely you have little connection to sensitivity in the very part that sets us apart from the nations of the world.

My sons school has a policy for the older boys. You can only get dismissed early if it’s your minhag and you have a note otherwise it’s a regular day for w

I work there and the traffic situation was terrible! Just by the way on Chanukah it took me over an hour to get to work each morning because of the INSANE traffic!

This is because lakewood is only place where everyone thinks they are a rosha for lighting at 630 pm

My school has regular dismissal and half the kids get picked up early anyway

This busing is really out of control. Better time routes and possibly sharing may be better. Last week @5:00pm from RT 9 going west on Central Blvd to the wawa @ Hope Chapel I counted 22 schools buses… This is crazy!

No one comes out ahead, because everyone is on the road together. No one gets home on time for the R’ Ahron zman; they are all stuck in traffic. I wish all schools would do regular dismissal and busses, and if someone is very makpid with the timing, there should be permission granted to pick kids up early from school. I think everyone would be happy with that!

I agree with the letter writer…it was total gridlock on many of the roads I had to use, with literally hours spent behind the wheel to pick up my kids.

If only we would be as careful with foundational elements of Yiddishkeit (Shmiras halashon, Shmiras Eiynayim, Tznius- wigs specifically) as the “lighting on time” craze…..

I wouldn’t be surprised if next year the major Poskim state everybody should light later 5:30- 6:00. Normal schedule and people can and should light later.

Hashem, Hashem- please shine the light of EMES that is currently נעדרת into the hearts and minds of your nation- to internalize and shift towards the REALLY important issues that stand in the way of the Geula!

just curious if the ranter actually asked the school why they did it this way. Maybe there is a reason

Thanks for suggesting! I asked the rosh mosad of an elementary school. They used to have regular dismissal, but with all the people who wanted to pick up early, the classes were half empty and boys who are ‘stuck’ resented and made lots of trouble. Then they started doing exciting programs for those who remained, essentially glorified babysitting. All this to give parents the option to let their boys go home on the bus at regular time so as not to be matriach the parents. Eventually, with teachers, principals and students all frustrated, they threw in the towel and made early dismissal, for which no buses were available.
