Letter: Beware of People Hacking Cameras Inside Your Home

I am asking you to please publicize this important information.

Many frum households use IP Cameras for security reasons. They have them installed inside the house and in bedrooms.

There is a thing where people are hacking IP Cameras very easily because people do not change the default passwords. On (moderated) this is a big deal.

There are several frum family cameras that have been hacked and clips are traded. These include clips of family members changing their clothing and (moderated).

There are (moderated) groups set up just to try and get access to cameras from frum households.

Please please please can you publicize this so people change their passwords. I am trying to do teshuva for past involvement with these things and I have seen it first hand.

Thank you.

  1. Generally you should not need to expose cameras to the internet. You can use vlans to segregate your network. If set up properly you can retain most functions and significantly increase privacy and security.

  2. As someone who works in this line with camera systems let me clarify something setting a password on your camera system is not what we are talking about each camera runs on its own Ip address each one needs a password that’s where the hack is and most people don’t even know it also you need to trust the company that installs cameras many times they have or can access everything

  3. Dont put cameras in your bedroom. Rule of thumb is to never take a picture you would not want to be made public and don’t have cameras recording things you don’t want publicized. If you wouldn’t put a camera in your bathroom, don’t put it in your bedroom either.
