Letter: Attention Bus Driver in a Hurry

Dear bus company,

I am writing to express my concern about a safety issue.

My child, who is new to riding the bus, had a frightening experience on his first day of school.

As he boarded the bus for the first time, the driver pulled away from the stop before he could even find a seat. My child was still standing and lost his balance, causing him to fall. This was not only terrifying for him, but also dangerous. He is also traumatized, as this was his first time on a school bus.

I understand that bus drivers have schedules to keep and routes to follow, but safety should always be the top priority. I urge you to remind your drivers to ensure that all passengers, especially young children, are seated and secure before moving the bus.

P.s. I intend to send this to the bus company, but I sent it here for publication so others can take note of the issue.

Sincerely,

A caring mother.

  1. I can’t agree more. I watch my kids taking two steps up and the bus driver closes the door and slams on the gas. Its crazy. Their tiny children. Wait a few more seconds so that they can find a seat or at least get onto the bus in the seating area!

  2. Assemblyman Avi Schnall should seek funding for adult bus monitors on each bus to ensure our children’s safety, prevent fighting, and guarantee correct drop-offs. Bus drivers, preoccupied with driving, cannot effectively supervise students, making monitors a necessary addition

    • Unfortunately, it isn’t obvious to you so I’ll spell it out.
The author sounds like they are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
We’re not talking dangerous, just discomfort, and the author says that their child is “Traumatized”.
Let the drivers do their jobs and let your kid adjust to the real world.
Your child isn’t in nursery like we were, when we started going on the bus with the aggressive Russian bus drivers in Brooklyn, and we’re fine.
Just teach your child to be more careful and stop coddling them, then blaming everyone else when something doesn’t go your way.
Mothers should stop thinking that they can protect their kids from the world.
I’m just asking people to take a breath, relax and grow from your experiences.

    • I agree and I’m welling to be a bus Monitor!!!I care for kids and bus drivers are always on the rush !!!And I do work for an all Jewish school so I know Safety is number one!! children are always our main concern!!!!

    • This is not actually a drama reaction but a real safety issue. I’m thinking that you wanted to write something and didn’t know what to write so you wrote something foolish.

  3. As a bus driver I assure you that your child is hundred percent safe once he is on the bus, if you’re really concerned you could drive your kid with your car, if a bus driver drives like it says in the books your child will get to school 12 o’clock, stop, shift to park, unbuckle, stand up, buckle the child, make sure everyone sits, settle to fight, close the open windows, sit down, buckle yourself, shift to drive, look in mirrors, 40 seconds later do the same process for the next kid…

  4. It’s easy to sit on a couch and write “the bus drivers shouldn’t rush they should drive slow” if a bus driver comes late he gets a yelling from the school, ask your school how it messes up the entire school if all the buses come different times, ask the teachers how it messes up the class if 4 girls come in 45 minutes late.

A bus driver is always in a rush with these Lakewood traffic… Then you complain why the buses are making traffic… Let them Pick up the child and go, without taking their time by every stop.

  5. We were lucky enough to have Otto Mann as our bus driver again. I’ve known him for many years when he drove my children to school in Springfield. He is so proud (as he should be) of his record, “15 crashes without a single fatality.”
He keeps the children in line by singing songs with them. He’s so sensitive he sings songs specific to the kids he’s driving. For the Chabad kids he leads them in “Yechi” & “Moshiach” while with the Satmar kids he sings “A Jew is not a Zionist, a Zionist is not a Jew” & “Israeli government shame on you”
Everyone should have an “Otto” as their kids bus driver.

    • 15 crashes without a fatality! are you kidding me! A bus driver singing songs to children while he’s driving a bus and this is a good thing?! 15 crashes with a school bus my goodness and he’s being praised…unbelievable!

      • I truly appreciate your naivety & innocence (I wished I possessed it).
        1. Look at my screen name.
        2. You could Google “Otto Mann” “Springfield” & “M(arge) Simpson” but I’ll save you the time.
There’s a cartoon comedy called “The Simpsons” about a fictional family living in the fictional town of Springfield. The name of the crazy bus driver (who is proud of his 15 crashes with no fatalities record) is wait for it….”Otto Mann”

  6. Booky it sounds to me like you are very frustrated in your job and do not belong there your number one priority is to make sure the children get to school safe not worrying if you are going to be chassed by the teachers or the school You are a accident waiting to happen because you think safety is an issue

    • No, I’m not frustrated on my job, I drive a bus B”h for 15 years, without a single incident with hashems help, bus drivers know what driving safe means, it’s not for the mothers to decide how a driver should drive, let the drivers do their job how they think it’s safe, You were never on a bus how can you decide when the bus should start driving, if you are concerned become a bus driver and be by every stop for 3 minutes.

Maybe there are a few wild Drivers, but you cannot make a statement that all drivers are wild.

    • Respectfully, Ms. Burns, do you appreciate being indoctrinated on how to do your job?. I hope your job isn’t teaching punctuation placement. I don’t believe you’d be very proficient at it. Have a blessed week ahead.

  7. We have written numerous times, bus drivers must get compensated by the hour not by the run.

That is the man reason for all of the safety issues and accidents with the Lakewood buses.
