Letter: Another Lakewood school on the brink of closure

Dear Lakewood Scoop, The parents of Ateres Esther need to know today – one week before school starts – if there will be a school for their about 90 daughters (enrolled in its Primary through 5th Grade).

I am one of those parents. The only thing keeping the school from opening is its lack of funding. We carefully chose this school – where the girls are happy, comfortable, confident, and feel cared for.

The school accepts children when they see that the parents have the same vision as the school. They do not consider the background or mold of the parents.

All the parents are very special, wanting the same traditional – yet high standard – education for their daughters, in a simple non-materialistic environment. We’re running this emergency campaign today to keep our beautiful – irreplaceable – school open.

A number of philanthropists want to see this campaign and the school succeed. They are watching it.

One committed to help with this campaign in a generous way when he sees it is progressing.

Another said he’ll give $10,000 when this comes together.

And others expressed their desire to help in general when things are rolling forward.

If we do what we can, they will do what they can. Please consider donating – if everyone gives something, the girls will be able to stay at their school that they love so much.

  1. If anyone is thinking this is a ploy to get A Rechnitz bail-out, I know this school and it is not the case. The parent body is very simple and non-materialistic as is the want of the school which is probably something that also creates funding issues. I hope Rechnitz does step in and help with the monetary issues as well as direct the administration about how to be fiscally healthy while maintaining the school model that they have. I urge everyone to donate to the cause as this is a school producing very fine students.

  2. How about the “so called unnamed people put the funds into an escrow account to be released upon crossing a specified threshold. Throwing out unverifiable pledges just doesn’t instill confidence in the forthcoming donation

  3. It’s unfortunate, but schools these days are run like a business unlike the way it used to be where it was run like a organization like hatzolah, chaverim etc.. And philanthropists are worried to donate because the money going to the man on the top not teachers and expenses

  4. $100,000/90 girls = about $1,100 per girl.

Why doesn’t the school make a campaign on rayze.it where each girl has a page and is asked to raise $1,100.

That way it’s more personal and not so hard for a girl and her family to raise this amount.

  5. Only after rechintz drops the goods does this article and campaign come out. This should have been written in June after the school year.

  6. Is this the new fundraising gimmick? I’m closing – help Rechnitnz!!?? And even if it is true, why do we need need to turn to outsiders, there is plenty of money local to cover every schools budget???

  7. I am not sure what’s going on maybe the problem is that most poeple in our community cant really afford the tuitions and the only way to survive is by the rich people stepping in ,the question is does every school have some rich people ,being that there are allot of yeshivish schools that most parents r in kollel.Another question is are the poeple with money intrested in stepping in and if not why not maybe they are not appreciated enough maybe they dodnt feel an achrayis to help out I am not sure myself,in the chasidesher schools like satmer the few wealthy people step in as they feel an achrayis and that’s not happening in lakewood maybe we dodnt have enough wealthy people not sure myself.

  8. People think that they can run a school with minimal tuition!!! There are costs involved. Besides paying the teachers, there is mortgage/rent, utilities, repairs, capital improvements etc etc. you cannot charge 3000 and expect the rest to come down miraculously. Yes, these parents cannot afford more. They are in Yeshiva and want to give their children the most simplistic education and lifestyle but in the long run this won’t work.

  9. The real school crisis is that 90% of our community cant afford the low tuitions we r paying now ,this is the real crisis that nobody is talking about.

  10. In Chasidishe kehila , the kehila takes responsibility for their mosdos. The bal habatim are trained that the majority of their tzedokos money goes to their local mosdos . The Rebbe makes sure that the mosdos are funded before any bal habos gives tzedokos to outside causes . Those that can’t afford to.pay tuition ,don’t pay much becsuse the kehila takes care of them . We don’t have thst attitude. So while we may have the same amount of gvirin, the gvirim
do not feel responsible for local Mosdos and much of the tzedokos money goes to out of town causes.

  11. The school was started and ran by reb moshe chaim Berstein and his wife they where moser nefesh for the school this school is the real deal

  12. 2 ideas to help prevent this from happening in the future.
    1) Every school needs to accept some wealthy people. To have a school that is only “very yeshivish” and excludes wealthy people doesn’t work.
    2) As Rob pointed out, we need to support local mosdos first before giving to the rest of the world. This needs to be a point raised and reiterated by local rabanim- assuming they agree with it.

  13. This school are kollel Ben hayeshiva. At Ateres Tziporah has a rich parent body that doesn’t give for same valid reasons.why not? Many parents have beutiful home, cars , vacation, live very well.why do the people only say that it the kollel people that don’t pay . The kollel people are paying throw there nose.

    • Ateres Tziporah is made up of working and some non working parents. Anyone who knows anything about the economy knows that the 150k-200k bracket is the worst place to be.

We are struggling not for luxuries but for basics like health care, food, and topped off with 15-20k in fed/state tax, much of which funds social welfare programs!!!

Most of us drive ‘nice” cars because leasing is cheaper than taking out a loan for a car as we dont have savings to cover initial costs.

I’m not saying yeshivish are living easy, but at least you know that you are not one lost paycheck away from losing health insurance or your home.

      THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE

  14. Just happened to be that 10 parents committed to 5000 tworads the school reopening
Besides for the other parents giving smaller amounts and it is a very poor parent body

  15. Having the frum education system splintered into so many schools simply does not make financial sense – and is result of a chaotic bus system that gets more difficult by the year. I say we either go back to paying a local melamed to teach in the local shul, or do what every public school system does and conglomerate the student body regardless of small differences between sects.

  16. This is a much bigger issue than just tuition , what is happening as older children are getting married and the parents have to come up with funds for the wedding expenses, , so they just don’t have enough to pay tuition.

  17. There are million dollar homes ,pesach vacation ,summer homes ,cars in Ateres Tziporah.Do you need people to post pictures or videos of this wealth people. They don’t support the school by give 5000 dollars one time there pesach getaway,mid-winter ,and summer vacation are five to twenty k a year . Why do they not support the school by them self. The answer is Mr rechnick is free. It is very sad.

  18. If you are making 150-200k you are doing very well. There are family in Lakewood with 5@6 kid that are 50-60k that is the majority of the community they give everything to tuition. They are the true heros.

    • Number 28, if you are making $150K in NJ with a family paying tuitions, you are not doing very well. Taxes, likely take 30-40k off the top, health insurance is $20K with an $8k deductible, property tax is a minimum of 10K, if you are working, you need 2 working cars, tuition’s, mortgage payment (even for a small house), food, clothing etc. Do the math, there isn’t much left over if anything. A family with a daughter in seminary, with other kids can be paying $60K in tuition’s.

A family with 5 or 6 kids making $50-60K at the very least, has Jersey Care and does not pay full tuition.

  19. To ‘ ARE you kidding ‘ – can I ask what size house you have that you are afraid of losing? People who are earning that much are many times struggling because they think they have to live in a huge oversized house.

  20. Wrong people like myslef that r making 150k and working full time and not eligible for any programs are also struggling and are heroes as well ,basically most of this town barely can afford tuitions and bis barely making ends meat.

  21. I’ve said this a hundred times before. We need to find a way to consolidate schools. Have several join together and rent one larger building with some shared necessities. The buses would save money because they are going to a centralized location, the tuition would be lower, or in this case prevent children from losing out on schooling. There is already a school in crisis, we need to do whatever we can to ease the burden on the taxpayers and the town, not to mention the children who don’t know where they might end up.
