Letter: 3-day Yom Tov Fridge issue

There are certain models of GE fridges that have a limit to how long Shabbos mode can be on for. They programed the Shabbos mode to turn off after 72 hours.

With Shavous being 3 days, anyone making early Shabbos (or using their fridge towards the end of Yom Tov) may be surprised to notice the lights back on.

A simple solution would be to tape or velcro the button on the top of the fridge or freezer.

This issue happened to myself and two other people with similar fridges.

  1. Look into the “Shabbos Keeper” from GE.
I’m not sure why the people don’t know about it.
It’s made by GE and I got mine at Town Appliance.
Its fully autamated even keeping through a 3-day yom Tov.
It’s an excellent item. and even has a hechsher…

  2. Thanks for your suggestion but you should be aware that most modern fridges have more functionality than just the lights that is initiated when the fridge is opened and closed. taping the button may not be enough. You really would need to speak to a Rav who is familiar with these issues and specific brand/model.

  3. Thats true there are electronics in every refrigerator.
The GE Shabbos keeper supposedly protects from every problem. (According to the OU and CRC). Thats what TownApp said.
    Wonder wat star-k says..

  4. Taping is NOT so simple – it not “l’chol Ha’Dai’ous”
Shabbos Keeper not only takes care of ALL the issues (build in conjunction with GE engineers) its also automatic. Meaning you set time, date and location and the Shabbos Keeper puts the fridge into Shabbos Mode by itself (No forgetting to set the (old)Shabbos Mode on on Erev Shabbos).
The Shabbos Keeper is also pretty “frum”. It goes on at Plag and goes off at 90 min (maybe its 96 min) after shkia.

    Can’t beat it.
