Legislation Allowing Digital Driver Licenses in New Jersey Heads to The Governor For His Signature

More than five years after first being introduced a bill allowing New Jersey to provide virtual driver licenses and I.D. cards, has finally been approved by both chambers of the New Jersey Legislature and now awaits a signature from Governor Phil Murphy.

The law, which wouldn’t take effect for as long as three years, would allow New Jersey residents to obtain mobile driver’s licenses or identification cards that they can access on smartphones or other electronic devices.

The state would have to apply for a waiver from the Transportation Security Administration to ensure that residents using Real ID mobile licenses are compliant with federal regulations.

Thirteen states already offer mobile driver’s licenses, including neighboring states like New York and Delaware.

New Jersey has been offering motorists the option of using or displaying a digital vehicle registration on a smartphone or electronic device since March 2023.
