Leading Rabbonim Ban Dozens Of Whiskeys

Wednesday, September 08, 2010_wm[Click on image to enlarge] In May, TLS posted a Whiskey Kashrus alert sent to us by the AKO (Association of Kashrus Organizations), in which the AKO Executive Committee had reason to believe that there were large liquor companies in the United States which may be owned in whole or part by Jews. The list has now been signed by several Gedolim, including Hagaon Harav Shlomo Miller Shlita.

The concern was, that such companies did not arrange for the sale of their chametz (mechiras chametz) during Pesach. Chametz-containing liquors owned, produced and/or aged by Jewish-owned companies over Pesach, are forbidden as Chametz She’avar Alav HaPesach.

These companies primarily manufacture bourbon, cordials, and American whiskey, and also deal in a small amount of Scotch and vodka.

  1. All of the above are taruvis – bourban is at least 51% mash (CORN) and the rest is typically barely – as noted in scotch. This was being reported 6 months ago and have not spelled out from when and which batches. Two things – remember – on average bourban is held for 8 yrs before bottling – so does that mean the last y8 years and then worry again about the product is 8 years ?? more clarification is needed

  2. I have been following this story very closely for months and from what I understand thier is NOT one Rav that is mattur this. Can you please name a few of the “many”Rabbonim that say this is muter?
