Lakewood to Crack Down on Corner-Huggers

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

I’d like to bring a dangerous, ongoing situation to your attention. I’ve been managing the family apartments on Forest Ave for 30+ years. Hundreds of cars daily are being parked illegally too close to the corners up and down Forest Ave, and in front of fire hydrants, making it extremely difficult for me and others to turn onto Forest Ave from the side streets, which I have to do many times daily.

The issue is getting worse lately.

In fact a few days ago a kid got run over partially due to visual obstruction from a corner hugging car.

Also, in the last six months Forest Ave was repaved and new corner sidewalks and curbs were installed. Beautiful job, but they still haven’t painted the corners yellow, adding to the problem.

Attached are a few recent photos of the worst offenders at the corner of 4th and Forest. Yes, I do call the police and they do respond and give tickets. But perhaps something could be done to avoid the problem to begin with as it is now overwhelming.

Sincerely,

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thank you for writing. I am asking Public Works to make sure the no parking areas around all these curbs is freshly painted and to post signs where possible. I will also ask the chief to have the officers be more vigilant with this type of enforcement

Ray

  1. The issue in many of these areas is the fault of our planning board, for approving applications where everyone knows full well that there is not enough parking for whatever the developer wants to construct. This causes otherwise law-abiding citizens to engage in unsafe parking practices, such as corner hugging.

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand that unless there’s a realistic parking plan, the board members are literally inviting this sort of behavior in all areas of town. These “not-enough-parking-approvals” are clearly making Lakewood’s streets more dangerous.

So perhaps, Mr. Mayor, you can also convey your concerns to our land use board members as well. That way, this chronic problem can be tackled from the very outset. Thank you.

    • It’s humorous how whenever a parking issue is mentioned some like yourself immediately point to overdevelopment and approvals. While in some instances you might be right, and probably are right, read the letter again and look at the picture – this is an old neighborhood, and a very old corner of the neighborhood, not one where lots of development has been approved in recent years. Due to the location (Forest Ave, especially in the 4th, 5th area) it’s pretty obvious that most of the parking is from outsiders coming to nearby facilities.

      • Zeeskie,
The more overdevelopment there is in in Lakewood, the more “outsiders” you’ll have. Hence the parking issue in “old” neighborhoods.
Bottom line is that Lakewood is (& continues to be) overdeveloped and this affects all areas.

  2. How about they crack down on bicyclists and scooterists riding on the wrong side of the street i.e. against traffic, that is the actual cause of the accident friday.

    • Oak St. has recently been dubbed the Wedding Hall capital of America. An additional 2 large halls will be opening for business there soon. They should change the name to Wedding Hall Avenue.

So, what exactly are you expecting as far as the parking there goes?

  3. When asked whether he plans to hire additional police officers to monitor the cars that are too close to the street corners, Mayor Coles told reporters on Tuesday:
“One thing I can promise you: We are going to deal with this problem in the most efficient way possible without cutting any corners.”

  4. The corner of New Hampshire and Lucy Rd is a problem. Cars parked to close to the corner and cars parked on New Hampshire directly across from Lucy. If you want to make a left into Lucy you block traffic on New Hampshire and then you have to make sure nobody is coming down Lucy before you can safely turn.

  5. This is a very big issue, especially prevalent with parents who wait in their cars at the corner for their children’s buses to come.

    • Can someone please educate the lady drivers waiting in their cars at the corner for their kids to at least park right next to the curb – instead of the 4 to 5 feet away from the curb! Don’t they realize that they’re disrupting the flow of traffic when they basically park their minivans in middle of the street?!

This is beside the fact that they’re also corner-hugging at my expense. How do they expect me to see properly around them? For crying out loud, they should only be hugging their children, and NOT my corner!!

  7. Also cars parked blocking sidewalks
I push a special needs young man up n down Forrest n the side streets. It’s soo dangerous having to go down a curb in between cars, out into street, around car then bck up on to the sidewalk.

    • There’s a new school operating out of a couple trailers that just popped up at Ridge Ave & New Hampshire. It doesn’t matter to me whether they’re legal or not, but can the staff please stop parking on top of the recently installed sidewalk!

It’s just not right of them to force pedestrians to walk so close to the cars & trucks speeding at high rates in the westerly direction on Ridge Ave. And it’s no excuse that they want their boys to play basketball on their tiny parking lot either. Pedestrian safety comes first!

  8. It still may be mesira. Time for people to move upstate NY or EY. I’m currently in EY looking to find an area for affordable housing for all of us.

  9. By LAW, you’re NOT supposed to park within 25 ft of a Stop Sign. It’s everywhere in Lakewood and it’s getting ridiculous. That’s how accidents happen everyday.

    • Actually the law is no parking within 50 feet of a stop sign (39:4-138h) nor within 25 feet of the nearest crosswalk or intersection (39:4-138e)
