Lakewood Streets Flooded Again After Intense Morning Storm [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

An early-morning thunderstorm swept through Lakewood today, inundating multiple neighborhoods across town.

Numerous vehicles were left partially submerged.

Chaveirim has already responded to approximately 300 calls this morning.

Motorists are reminded never to drive through deep waters, as it can permanently damage your vehicle.

You may not know, but the language you used is vulgar. I hear many fine people using this word, clearly not privy to its vulgarity.

“Privy to its vulgarity.”

I agree with your point.
I enjoyed your pun.

Maybe if you use nicer language, then Hashem will send us lots of Bracha.
As an example the language and some other stuff that goes around in California is not so clean and guess what there is a major fire near LA and believe it or not after a few hours the hydrants went dry. We need desperately
סייעתא דשמיא. In CA they were not trying to acquire any
סייעתא דשמיא
One of the reasons that we merited to leave Mitzraim was due to our clean language.
CA is not clean plus some other stuff that is not fit for print and that equals lots of fires and lots of riots.
I am not referring to the Frum neighborhoods, I am speaking about the rest of California where you will see sometimes a high speed Police chase maybe 110 mph-you can google that.

And it’s only going to get worse. What do you expect when you cover the soil with buildings, streets, parking areas, etc. The rain cannot soak into the ground so it just runs off the covered areas and floods. How many huge homes are replacing small ranch homes on the same lot? With more ground cover the more rain goes into the streets. Thank all the people on the towns committees, boards, etc. for approving everything the developers want, without thinking about the future consequences.

Folks who have a basic science education understand all of the points you made. Unfortunately the majority of Lkwd resident lack this basic knowledge. Then there is a city govt that doesn’t mandate storm sewers when developers build. It’s not gonna get better.

The problem is the drain infrastructure. Manhattan is a concrete jungle but does not flood.

Did you not know that there are pumps working 24/7 to keep Manhattan from flooding? Seriously over 13million gallons are pumped daily.

Did you not know that the paved roads in Mahattan are sloped to thousands of catch basins and storm drains? So runoff there is actually FASTER than areas of grass??

What do you expect when you build or pave over everything? Of all the construction that I’ve seen in my area there has been absolutely no drainage pipe upgrades. I’ve been to planning board meetings and though they look at ways to get the water off the “improvements” they never address the overall scope of the drainage volume. If you have multiple projects going on in the same area you need to assess the entire volume added to the system, not just on which individual project will add. So if your wastewater infrastructure can handle say 10,000 gal/min and each property is adding 1,000 gal/min then when you reach 8 properties you need to stop construction in that area until the infrastructure is improved. But when you have members on the planning board with little to no construction or municipal planning experience who vote and approve construction while ignoring ordinances that you quote to them, this is what you get.

Just be careful

Lakewood is in desperate need of a full infrastructure overhaul. The lack of open land to absorb this water and the age of the decrepit sewer system is the main issue. Concrete and black top do not absorb the water. If your shul or home is on a lower level that is where the water is going to go. Fluid moves to the lowest point over the easiest route. Also, please dont drive through water over your front bumper; 1) you dont know how deep it actually is or the condition of the road below the water and 2) if it gets into your air intake it could hydrolock you engine….water does not compress and will utterly destroy your vehicles engine. EVs aren’t safe either. Battery packs are designed for temporary water resistance NOT full submersion….

..as long as they keep cutting down the trees to build more houses the flooding will continue

I’ve lived in Lakewood since 1977. One of those pictures is an area known as “The Swamp” and people built. Yes, it flooded.

Keep building....

This is what happens when our architects and engineers don’t think about drainage around buildings when designing them. Where is the water supposed to go with these huge buildings and no area to absorb the water. Insurance will not cover this kind of runoff of water into basements unless you bought additional coverage. Enjoy your basement pool! Township administrators should be ashamed of themselves approving some of these developments and hug buildings.

The Lakewood Government failed this township. Everyone should express concern about how badly this Township is running. Here are the failures they have.
1. The Sewer Drain is never cleaned out or there is any sewer draining that block. 2. Street lights are mostly burned out. 3. Route 9 and Route 88 are dangerous to drive on on since there is no police patrolling everyday to end dangerous drivers.
4. A Parking Garage is needed
5. Need police to patrol the shopping center to end dangerous parking.
6. We need a better traffic planner and more traffic lights to end dangerous parking.

We might be building all over like mad with no cheshbon but don’t say it’s excusable for flooded roads. Israel doesn’t have a stitch of grass and even they figured out how to deal with Downpours. The streets may be covered with 2 inches of rushing water but it doesn’t pool up like here in Lakewood the drainage system is disastrous. #thank the vaad for putting in their great people.

so much for all the “studies” done by engineers that are needed to get approval before construction, its all just a paper work procedure and nothing more ,do you need proof here it is for you to see!!!!

Uh, sorry, you can’t blame the TWSP for this one. Check the building codes. The Twsp boards actually REQUIRE a certain amount of grass on every lot and building project.
The problem isn’t drainage. The problem is pitch. And high water bed. Ask any Well Digger guy.

This has nothing to do with overbuilding which is an issue of it’s own. Any large city has no grass or trees and does not have the floods we see in Lakewood. This needs to be fixed asap!

Most modern cities mandate a fixed amount of green space when developing. They also mandate storm sewers. 50 years ago it would pour like this and it wouldn’t even slow the drive to the shore on a Sunday. I live in a city the size of Lkwd, we have storm sewers and an average rainfall that is almost double that of Lkwd. It just doesn’t happen. This doesn’t happen because developers are required to finance and support storm sewers.

Let’s be clear — water drainage is civil engineering, not architecture.

Architects don’t design stormwater systems — that’s entirely in the domain of licensed civil engineers, who handle grading, runoff calculations, retention systems, and site drainage infrastructure.

The real issue isn’t the architect — it’s the overdevelopment allowed by certain township policies, combined with outdated or undersized infrastructure. When too much impervious surface is permitted (driveways, rooftops, paving) and the drainage systems aren’t upgraded to match, flooding is inevitable.

Blaming the architect misses the point. The flood risk grows when:

Pervious surfaces like grass or soil are removed

Proper drainage design isn’t enforced

The town lacks strong infrastructure planning

Cities like Manhattan have way more pavement, yet they don’t flood as much — because they invested in serious drainage infrastructure.

Lakewood’s flooding isn’t just from development — it’s from letting development outpace stormwater infrastructure. It’s time to stop blaming the design team and start demanding accountability where it belongs — on civil planning and enforcement.

Five Decades In Lakewood

Lakewood’s real issue is that twenty commentators are blaming infrastructure when the Metedeconk River rose more than a foot per hour this morning.

The fact of the matter is that twenty years ago flooding in Lakewood and surrounding towns was much worse. It is just that today there are more people being affected when a neighborhood floods.
