Lakewood School District comes together for family displaced by fire

When Lakewood Board of Education President Moshe Bender heard about the home fire on Friday, he immediately called the Superintendent with the address to find out if there were any District students living in the home.

Once it was confirmed that the District had two families living in the home, a plan to support the families was immediately put into place.

It was quickly learned, that one of the families with a preschool child, is a young couple, who went through the Lakewood School system, and whose dad served in the United States military. The other family, was the parents of two Lakewood High School students, and the grandparents of the preschool child.

The families are currently in temporary housing due to the severity of the damage to the home.

But many stepped up to the plate to help the families.

Piner Elementary School Principal, Marcy Marshall, and Piner Elementary staff members bought the preschooler clothing and a new backpack over the weekend. Lakewood High School Principal, Ebony Rivera, and Lakewood High School staff members are having a dress down day today, in order to raise funds for the family. Several Lakewood Schools are also having dress down days to raise money for the family.

General Counsel Michael Inzelbuch donated $150.00 to each child for clothing, which was purchased over the weekend so that the students can attend school on Monday.

Abe Krawiec of the LSTA scheduled transportation for the three students with the assistance of Ana Faone, and which took effect today.

The Lakewood School District is also providing trauma and crisis counseling to all students via Sally Castellano, one of the District’s Social Workers.

“The Lakewood Community is always about people helping people,” said Michael Inzelbuch.
