A Lakewood resident today nearly fell for a frightening scam involving his wife, Askonim involved told TLS.
This morning, the resident received a phone call from a caller who stated that his wife was involved in a serious accident with a pedestrian struck, and she had been taken into custody to be charged.
The caller then demanded the resident send over $2000 via Zelle in order to bail out his wife and prevent her from being transported to the County Jail.
Frightened, the husband hung up the phone and began putting together the money, while trying to call his wife, who is a teacher in Lakewood.
When he couldn’t reach her, he called Askonim, who phoned Lakewood police headquarters to verify what was happening, as it sounded suspicious. They received confirmation that there was no such situation unfolding.
The Askonim then got hold of his wife at school and confirmed she was okay. It turns out it was just a bad scam.
”Nobody is calling you to send bail payment via Zelle,” an Askan involved in the case stated. “Should you hear something like that, take it as a red flag and immediately hang up.”
A “bad” scam?
Which are the good ones?
The ones that are more obvious so you hang up before getting nervous.
All are advised to be aware of another scam (which can be verified with askanim) that is, indviduals obtaining a bogus restraining order as a means to get the upper hand in divorce.
1- DO NOT VIOLATE THE RESTRAINING ORDER!
2- FIGHT SAID RESTRAINING ORDER!
3- DO NOT SIGN ANY AGREEMENT SANS FULL UNDERSTANDING.
4- DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNDER DURESS!
5- DAVEN THAT THE PERPETRATOR
REPENT’S
Duh
Thanks for the awareness
Really? TLS gotta post this? Why in the world would people fall for these things for more then a second
lol, you think that till it happens to you.
I doubt you are smarter than the 70% of people who would at least become nervous when presented with urgent and confusing info with no way to verify.
After all, If you WERE smarter, you would understand that 70% have that reaction!
In this case, the guy did EXACTLY what he should have. He reached out for verification, while making sure to cover the cost on the possibility it was true!
There is never any need to zelle anyone money, all utility company’s can be paid online or over the phone by you calling the number on your bill, the government whether local or state or federal never calls you for money, they send letters, also bail can only be set after the person is already processed.
I wonder if this is the same person.
This morning a strange man knocked on my door and asked if my name is “Jack” (it’s Yankele but close enough).
He said, “Today is your lucky day because I have magic beans for sale.”
I paid him a handsome sum of money & he left. When my wife found out what I did she threw the beans out the window. The next morning I looked outside and there was a beanstalk going mamish all the way up to shomayim!
I plan on climbing it after Shabbos & will let everyone know what I find
Any phone numbers you don’t know block it when I get these numbers my phone tells me what areas that the phone number is coming from I texted them back and tell them that they called a funeral home
