Lakewood Police To Crack Down on Dangerous Purim Fireworks

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

I’d like to start by thanking you for this open forum. It is a great way to reach out to you!

You have done so much for our town and I’m hoping you can help me with my concern as well.

For many years now, our town deals with a nuisance during the purim season. I’m referring to fireworks. They are very noisy, scare the little kids and even worse, they are dangerous. They are also set off with little regard for the time. Sometimes even after midnight. I’ve seen recently that the fireworks that fly up are also illegal.

So my request to you, Mayor Coles, is to please put a plan together to eradicate this dangerous nuisance from our town. Enforcement should be stepped up to stop both the sale and usage of fireworks.

Fireworks are in no way associated with purim. There is no religious requirement to use them and as a matter of fact there is a requirement not to use them as it is something that is dangerous and causes harm to people every year.

Thanks and looking forward to a safe purim!

PS. I sincerely hope that this letter gets a response and is published on TLS. If even 1 injury gets prevented because of this it can save someone from so much pain and heartache.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon,

Thank you. I truly enjoy the engagement with everyone who writes in.

I share your concern with fireworks at Purim & other times of the year.

I’ve asked the chief to place emphasis on discouraging anyone from using fireworks during Purim. We have many additional officers out ensuring everyone’s safety. Hopefully they will be able to stop some of it.

I hope you have a joyful holiday. Purim is one of my favorite times of the year. I always look forward to celebrating with my friends and neighbors

Stay Safe

Ray

  1. Yes they should enforce safety at Purim but please also around other holidays and times of the year i.e. independence Day etc.. there are fireworks at all hours of the night and it is very disturbing especially to children sleeping

    • Under the New Jersey Explosives and Fireworks Act (N.J.S.A. 21:2-1 et seq., as amended by P.L.2017, C.92):

It is unlawful to sell, offer for sale, possess, or use fireworks anywhere in the State without a valid permit. However, recent changes to the law now permit persons 16 years of age or older to lawfully buy, possess and use certain sparkling devices and novelties. These permissible fireworks are limited to hand held or ground based sparklers, snakes, and glow worms; smoke devices; and trick noisemakers, including party poppers, snappers, and drop pops. The sale, possession and use of all other fireworks requires a valid permit.

  2. Thank you for writing this letter. Purim has become so unpleasant for my family. The loud booms scare my kids. They sit inside the house crying and unable to go to sleep. It can go on past midnight on Taanis Esther night. The little kids and adults can’t fall asleep till its over and that kills our Purim day. Its dangerous and irresponsible to buy them for your children. Just google what it looks like when a kids fingers are blown off from fire works. Wishing everyone a happy and peaceful Purim.

  3. explosive fireworks are assur gomur to sell or to use they have removed limbs in the past, no child should have to go around like a wounded veteran, but the color-only ones like sparklers and jumping jacks are ok

  4. We should also ban costumes. My kids are scared at the sight of them. They get nightmares and cant sleep for the next week after Purim.
Also they ban music all that noise hurts my little kids ears. Its really no healthy for little kids. Sweets when are we going to ban that. Its pure poison the kids get sick from all that candy we should boycott any store that sells them. I’m sure there are many more stuff we should ban and call the police about.Ill let all the chinuch experts and safety experts fill in the blanks.

    • Talking about your kids, children lose fingers and hearing from fireworks it’s not the noise it’s the pain and permanent damage. Sadly each and every year we hear tragedies.
