Lakewood Police this afternoon identified the pedestrian struck and killed on Cedarbridge Avenue on Monday night.
At approximately 7:30 pm, Officers from the Lakewood Police Department responded to the report of a pedestrian who was struck by a motor vehicle on Cedarbridge Avenue, just west of Martin Luther King Drive.
The pedestrian, 45-year-old Roger A. Conover of Lakewood, was struck as he tried to cross Cedarbridge Avenue by a 1997 Nissan Maxima driven by a 47-year-old Jackson woman as she was traveling eastbound. The woman initially fled the scene, but was apprehended a short time later.
After Mr. Conover was hit, he was struck a second time by a 2017 Toyota Sienna, operated by a 33-year-old Lakewood man who was traveling westbound. The victim was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus by Hatzolah in critical condition. Unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injures sustained in the crash.
“At this time the investigation is still on going and charges have not been filed against anyone involved,” Detective Liutenant Greg Staffordsmith said.

Leaving the scene of an accident will cause the victim to be hit a second time since a drive cannot see person dressed in dark lying in the middle of the road!
It can also be he was hit after ‘bouncing’ off the first car – even before landing. But yes, if a person is dressed in all dark, it is very hard to see the person until very close. Therefore reflectors are imperative. there have been campaigns around town; they are available iN NPGS, Seasons, Center of Town and other stores. I feel bad for the person, but his is not the first time. People have been killed about 10-20 times in the past twenty years. Family members: Please encourage your relatives to wear reflectors – every time they step into the street – from sunset to sunrise!!!
You’re telling me she was not charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident? That makes no sense. What was she thinking? Such a sad story.
It might be hard to see a person dressed in dark clothes laying on the road but if you are paying attention to the road you would definitely see them.
How do you know he was dressed in dark clothing? Necer leave the scene. But abother article sa8d her cell phone was checked and there didnt seem to be any other odd things in initial investigation. What about the second person that hit him? Havent read anything about his cell being check or drug test on him. Time will tell. It always does.
Robyn, I know personally the second person. He’s a very normal man and a father of a few children. In many ways he’s the victim of others’ negligences. He was innocently driving to his destination and his life was transformed by other people acting in an irresponsible manner. It’s very sad the somebody lost their life, but that doesn’t justify the pedestrian.
SAFE DRIVING PEOPLE! Period! Stop with analytics or theories. Do your job and be responsible as a driver – end of story! It certainly is stupid that so many don’t bother putting a reflector on as irritating as it is, though, “Drivers responsibility” is to PAY ATTENTION and with caution!

Why does everyone keep turning to the driver? Why are there new crackdowns on driving in Lakewood because of pedestrian fatalities? It’s very sad people lost their lives but look at each story and you’ll see most cases were pedestrian negligence (Jaywalking, crossing against a light, not crossing by a crosswalk etc.) and not the driver’s fault. They were also mostly at night. I think we need a pedestrian crackdown including education. Not everyone’s mother taught them how to cross the street.

This young man is someone’s son, brother, father, cousin, etc and justice needs to be done so this family can have peace. I pray the police do there job and charges are bought up on the person whom hit this man and left him for dead.
