Question:
Hello Chief.
Thank you for all you do for our town!
I am hoping that you can explain what the law is regarding the township L bus. This afternoon I saw a bus pull off to the shoulder of the road on Locust Street and let some people off. It happened to have flashing yellow lights, I think. It did not occur to me to have to stop due to the absence of stop sign, red flashing lights and the fact that it was pulled off to the side of the road. However, I got yelled at by some people attempting to cross the road who I only noticed as I was midterm. This was not near any crosswalk so I was not looking for crossing pedestrians.
Can you please clarify what the law is for this bus and how it differs and compares to school buses. If the law requires stopping, why does the bus pull off to the shoulder? If there is a need to stop for the L bus, perhaps the township can create a education/marketing campaign for the general public, who are not aware of these laws. None of us want to break any laws or G-d forbid, hurt any pedestrians.
Thank you so much for all you do,
RB
The Chief’s response:
Hi Rachael. I am sorry this took a few days to get an answer but what I got back was this. Rabbi Klein, who runs the L bus service for the Township, said none of the buses have flashing yellow lights like a school bus; they only have their amber hazards, which they put on as they unload curbside.
I had asked the Rabbi to ask the bus drivers to remind the passengers not to cross in front of the bus but to wait until the bus pulls away to cross so a motorist can see them.
Hope this helps,
Chief Meyer
