Lakewood Police Chief Greg Meyer answers your ‘Ask The Chief’ questions: Patrols

The following is an ‘Ask The Chief’ question submitted to TLS, and the Chief’s response. Email your questions for the Chief to [email protected].

Question:

Good morning Chief!

I’m really thrilled about this new column on The Lakewood Scoop. You truly are everyone’s police chief!

Often while driving around town after dark I see your patrol officers doing their job patrolling stop signs on Squankum and Monmouth and First St & Monmouth, making sure no one rolls through the stop signs.

When I drive through Martin Luther King Drive and John St, I see local residents crossing the roads there haphazardly, not giving much thought to passing traffic. And, as you know., that area around the Public Authority housing is most often the location of the violent crimes that take place in town.

I haven’t ever driven inside the actual complexes there so I don’t know if there are regular patrols there, however I can comfortably assure you that the outer roads there certainly lack sufficient patrol officers.

Around 2 weeks ago I was driving on MLK Dr trying to reach Cedar Bridge Ave when a driver ahead of me slowed down for no apparent purpose. Just before the light he opened his window to curse me out.

I know you could tell me to make a police report of such incidents, but at the same time I’m asking you if you could be more proactive in increasing patrols in this area so that in the future, violators would be deterred.

Thanks so much!

Wishing you all the best!

The Chief’s Response:

Good afternoon Moshe hope you had a great Shabbos. We will certainly increase our marked presence in that area of Martin Luther King Blvd during the evening hours. We also have several plain clothes individuals who work this evening hours and often when they are in unmarked cars observing certain areas they will ask the marked cars to avoid the area for a while. So inbetween these times I will ask that patrol be increased.

Thank you for taking the time to send a question, look forward to receiving more in the future.

Chief Meyer

  1. Why are speed tracking devices placed on streets such as Oak and then no patrols are there ticketing those drivers that continue to go up to 40mph?

  2. Are we really asking to be turned into ocean parkway and the rest of 25mph Brooklyn? When _that_ happens, the complains will never stop. So don’t start them now, thanks all
