Lakewood Police Chief Greg Meyer answers your ‘Ask The Chief’ questions: A few questions

The following are ‘Ask The Chief’ questions submitted to TLS, and the Chief’s response. Email your questions for the Chief to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Chief,

I was wondering if you have a moment to answer these few questions:

1. I have seen multiple times (including tonight when writing these questions) Police officers putting on their lights, we obey the law by pulling over and a few seconds later its turned off. Times that they would go through the traffic light as if they are just trying to cut ahead and than turn off their lights

I respect the police officers in this town, but shouldn’t they obey the law as well?

2. Safety is always first yet on 4th and Monmouth where I have walked for 5 years there is still no cross walk light. Just a couple weeks ago there was an accident with a car hitting a kid with a bike. I have to always look at the traffic light to see whether I can cross or not at the same time keep my eyes on the road make sure I don get hit. Cant we get this crossing light up asap.

3. Lastly I always wondered why when a police officer pulls someone over for whatever reason there is another police vehicle that pulls up behind (as if they pulled over the police officer) is there some significant why 2 cop cars are there. I have also noticed this on the major highways.

Looking forward to a response.

The Chief’s response:

Thank you for your excellent questions that deserve a valid answer.

1. A police officer while responding to an emergency call for service may activate his overhead lights to assist him get through traffic such as an intersection and they he shuts them off and continues to the call as he or the dispatchers have determined the level of response. An officer responding to a bank hold up or alarm would not want to give away his arrival by arriving with lights and sirens blaring, so he would turn them on only when needed then shut them back off.

2. We will look into the crossing signs at 4th and Monmouth as you are correct it is a very busy and dangerous intersection. Thank you for bringing this one up.

3. When an officer makes a motor vehicle stop, he or she does not know who they have stopped and if that person is wanted or dangerous, so a backup unit is always sent until the stop is complete or the officer has determined the identity of the driver and occupants and that they deem themselves to be safe at that location with that incident. Seeing 2 police officers is the norm, more than that would indicate a high risk stop of a wanted person, or a person with a substantial history.

Again thank you for your questions, I hope these answers help and we will be working on number 2 asap.

Chief Meyer

  1. Attention LPD: When you pull over a women wearing a snood down to her eyes in a 1993 minivan, she is not armed and dangerous. No backup needed! Don’t bother wasting resources on her.
Thank you for your service. We appreciate it.

    • Untill someone bad is driving a minivan and its is dark . police have no idea .
and what are you saying Jews are unable to kill anyone ? ridicules statement . there are bad people in every race and religion. get off your high horse

    • Let the cops do their jobs the way they are trained to do it. No need to put their lives in danger just because people like you are “offended”.

  2. jason, hunch said a woman wearing a snood down to her eyes in a 1993 minivan. this woman has not a violent bone in her body, I guarantee you no cop is in danger from her.
you translated that to mean all jews. But that was not part of the conversation.
as you said, bad people come in all shapes and sizes and races and religions. but not ladies with snoods down to their eyes …

  3. Dear Chief,
Can we please get lights on the police cars that are not so bright, I find them blinding at night. It almost caused an accident the other night.

  4. @BLINDING LIGHTS

Many of the vehicles have an option for minimal lighting to flash or cruise mode which are all lights that are dimmed out and not flashing, they are steady

  5. very often after the first officer has already dealt with the driver and is doing the paper work in the police car, another police car comes to join in the fun. At this point the first officer that already feels comfortable should please send away the second police car, to avoid more traffic etc..
