Lakewood PD Statement on School Bus Accident

As first reported on TLS, just after 9am yesterday the Lakewood Police Department responded to the intersection of Central Avenue and Glen Avenue after receiving the report of a motor vehicle crash that involved an occupied school bus and several parked cars.

“Upon arrival, Officer William Allen learned that the school bus, operated by a 58 year old Eatontown man, had initially crossed over a double yellow line and struck on oncoming Toyota Camry as the Camry traveled west on Central Avenue,” Captain Greg Staffordsmith said. “After the initial impact, the bus continued northeast across the lawn of 179 Glen Avenue. As it entered the roadway on Glen Avenue, it struck an oncoming Toyota Avalon that was traveling south on Glen Avenue. The bus continued on and ultimately came to rest after striking a second Toyota Camry that was parked facing north on Glen Avenue.”

“Fortunately, no one suffered any injuries as a result of the crash, however, the operator of the bus may have had a medical episode that contributed or may have caused the incident. Currently the investigation is still active. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Lakewood Police Department at 732-363-0200.”

It’s time to call out the National Guard before something really bad happens.

Is this just a Lakewood problem or is it widespread?

I live in a town about the same size of Lakewood. In the past 30 years we’ve had zero school bus accidents. Drivers for the bus company have full physicals and vision exams, frequent drug testing and a complete background check.

On another note, the number of vehicle accidents and roll overs in Lkwd. continue to surprise me. We had our first rollover in decades a few weeks back. It make the headlines in the local newspaper. I can’t blame it on SUVs, here in the west we have lots of SUVs on the road.

Frankly when I visit family in Lkwd, I do not drive and when a passenger I’m frightened to see how many drivers ignore speed limits, and traffic laws.
