A Grand Jury sitting in Ocean County has indicted two Lakewood residents in connection with the death of their infant daughter earlier this year, prosecutors announced today.
On September 10, 2025, Ruben Santiago, 36, and Caitlin Gibson, 28, were charged with Murder following the May 5th death of their three-month-old baby girl.
At approximately 7:20 p.m. on May 5th, Lakewood Police officers responded to a home on Pinehurst Drive after receiving a report of an infant in distress. Officers arrived to find the child unresponsive. Lakewood EMS transported the baby to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, before she was transferred to Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Neptune. She was pronounced deceased the following day.
An autopsy by the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the baby died from blunt force trauma to the head, which caused fractures and a subdural hematoma. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
A multi-agency investigation — involving the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Special Victims Unit, Lakewood Police, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s CSI Unit — revealed that Santiago and Gibson, the infant’s parents, were responsible for the child’s death. Both were arrested on May 7th and have remained in custody at the Ocean County Jail since that date.
