A misjudgment that likely will cost services for hundreds of public school students and the Board of Education’s refusal to correct it have ignited an uproar among parents and advocates who see the circumstance as an example of ulterior interests trumping public education. This school year, the district had the potential to spend $3.32 million toward Supplemental Educational Services, which are federally funded and provide tutoring to low-income public school students who are struggling academically.
The district, however, predicting that enrollment for the tutoring services would be as low as in past years, reserved only $1.37 million for it and got approval to use the rest of the money for general programs at both public and private schools.
But enrollment didn’t sputter; it flourished, increasing to 1,782. The result was that the district could not afford to tutor more than half, or about 964, of the enrolled students for whom the funding was intended. Soon contracted tutors were telling parents that program would halt before it began. Full article in APP.

The money has gone to tutor non public school children.
and who paid for the taxs that support the public schools?
was it the undocumented “illegal” immigrants parents who 99.99999% dont pay a cent of taxs?
or was it the “non-public school” parents whos children are entitiled to services equal to public school children.
people forget that not so long ago funds were never sent over to the non-public schools as was mandated by the federal programs.
the calculations are based on the total students serviced which numbers vastly include those from non-public schools.
Imagine if all the non-public school students decide to go to tpublic school, which by law they have every right to do.
What will your tax bill look like?
It’s about $17k per public school student multiply that by about 15k non-public school students = $255 Million more then it is now.
Plus the infrastructure will have to be expanded…..
So enjoy the lower taxes that these people are causing by not sending their children to the public school system.
I dare you to send your kids to public schools. I’ve been hearing that threat for years. I dare you.
Please send them to the public school system! Just remember the boys and girls ride on the same bus and sit in the same classrooms and eat the same food. and don’t forget to leave your torah at the door we do not teach religion in public schools it’s the law. Welcome to public education!!!
What about all the aid that the non-public schools receive with taxpayer monies such as supplies and money from state local and federal funds? Doesn’t that factor into your equation? Send all the children to public schools and we will be able to get more government funding. But remember the old saying when in Rome do as the Romans do.you will have to abide by the rules of this country. NO SEGREGATION. Until then be happy with what you have

it was done in other towns in NY. ended up costing Gazillions! We have tons of special needs students. We would also be required to have Kosher food. The infrastructure would really have to expand . Your taxes would double and triple Hee Hee! Look people aren’t taxpaying Jews entitled to an education for their kids in America? or only nontaxpaying illegals?
Look I think this whole system stinks. Does it make sense that if all the private school kids would enroll as they would in most towns that taxes would be 15,000? I have no problem with giving the private schools some bones when they are the ones paying for everything The only issue I have is that it sounds like this was not even the intent. This sounds like simple incompetancy. It sounds like the BOE was not in touch with reality. It is amazing to think though that any illegal with 3 kids cost us like 60,000. I guess that’s America.
One thing I will add is that it is clear that the new BOE is working very hard to get spending under control in general. If my fellow seniors don’t back them and allow the NAACP to bus in their minions from across Jersey to spew hate and venom at each meeting and we stand by and watch without any support they will stop making these tough decisions that we have been pleading them to make.
Let us not preach to them during the campaign seasons what we want from them and when we finally get some cross community success to do so just to throw them under the bus.
The question is can we show the BOE that despite mistakes at times they have our support.
#4—you will never send your kids to a public school
Regardless of what religion (Jewish, Catholic, Christian) those that send their children to private school would NEVER send them to Lakewood’s public schools. Why? Because the quality of their education would suffer. Such a shame that I would rather move my entire family than send my child to kindergarten in Lakewood.
By all means enroll your children in public school. That would reduce the cost per child, they would be in buildings that meet building and zoning codes, busing would cost the district less money as the buses would only have to go to 6 buildings instead of like 80+ and only be on the road about 4 hours a day rather then from 6am – 6pm+. However, as #6 stated boys and girls will ride the same bus, sit in the same classes and religion will be left at the door as per the separation of church and state. I would say its actually a winning solution to lower taxes in the long run
Oh please, if we sent our children to public school (which is anyway not an option for religious reasons), our taxes would go through the roof. Don’t delude yourself.

I don’t get it! If it’s really a mistake, why the hating? If this is the number of children they catered too in past years isn’t it logical for them to make this calculation?! And now that it didn’t work what are they supposed to do? Take back money that was already spent?
