The Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) has awarded a contract to In Line Services, Inc. for the replacement of approximately 1,800 water meters, the Authority said.
The new meters feature digital displays that read by the gallon, and they will be integrated into the Authority’s automated meter reading system.
“This project represents the third and final phase of the Authority’s migration to the automated reading system which has proven to be extremely successful.”
See a 2013 TLS interview with the MUA’s Executive Director Justin Flancbaum regarding the halachic aspect of these meters.

Water meters which employ electronic components in the metering or in the transmission have been banned from use on Shabbos and Yom Tov by all the Rabbonim in Eretz Yisroel. Even the Rabbanut agreed with this. There are several companies that manufacture Rabbinically approved water meters such as Master Meter in Texas which is an affiliate of Arad Co. in Eretz Yisroel and those have been deployed by KJ Water Co. in Monroe, NY. To recieve Rabbinic approval the electronics of the meter must be disabled for the duration of Shabbos and Yom Tov and this does not cause any loss to the water company.
the new MUA meters are universally approved? by ALL poskim? is there an alternative which is according the standards of a Yeshiva community?
