Lakewood Moves To Install Traffic Signal At Route 9 And Oak Street Intersection

Route 9 in Lakewood is a notoriously difficult road to navigate. An excess of cars snarl traffic each day as hundreds of drivers clog the road well beyond its carrying capacity.

One of the worst areas is the intersection of Route 9 and Oak Street. Drivers often find that turning left from Oak Street onto the 9 is a nearly impossible task.

On Thursday evening, Lakewood’s Township Committee moved to address the issue by moving forward with a plan to install a traffic signal at the intersection.

Because Route 9 is a state-owned road, Lakewood is unable to unilaterally install a traffic signal without state permission. The Committee therefore passed a resolution to request New Jersey’s Department of Transportation to give Lakewood permission to install a traffic light at the intersection.

There is currently no timeframe in which the traffic light will be erected, but the Committee plans on getting it installed as soon as possible.

  1. There is no safe place to cross between prospect and chestnut.no cross walks. No traffic lights etc .
Even on the corner of chestnut there is only a cross walk cross rt 9, not chestnut.
It’s about time Lakewood and the county/state install at least some temporary traffic lights .. someone was killed already by Presidential. Not sure why they aren’t working faster to get this done

  2. 5/10 years ago we were told that the new development will have no impact on traffic. This light should be paid for by the traffic engineer that keeps saying the new developments have no impact on traffic. There needs to be accountability. When they finish the next development the township will again blame the state for the traffic when they force us to pay for their shortsightedness.

  3. i don’t understand why this is different then every time they request something from the state, why would they approve this?
this is only a request from the state, same as the request to widen RT 9 that isn’t going anywhere.

  4. Being that I am someone that lives in this area I am dreading this. So now you will be able to turn off of Oak but think about what traffic on RT 9 north and south is going to look like. It will be a disaster

    • Couldn’t have said it better myself! Do you remember what the traffic on the 9 looked like when the crossing guard was there?

  5. if it’s the township who will actually be sponsoring this project, it shouldn’t be a big deal to arrange to have the light installed over a weekend. Shavuos weekend would be perfect. Please make it happen!! Thank u

  6. Remember that while a traffic light can help, it will slow down travel on route 9 even more. It’s what lights do.

Honestly, this and the rest of the horrible traffic south of the lake and elsewhere is self-imposed. You can’t expect to keep on voting for the same people that increase density and also not ruin normal functioning, safety, and quality of life.

  7. Stop complaining!
People complain they NEED a light there, then people complain when a light is going there!
Some people are just never happy.

  8. Don’t get so excited! This is only a request submitted to the state. The process can take years! I, for one, am not holding my breath.

  9. The benefits of a traffic light will never be realized if they don’t work on Oak Street. Oak Street needs to have turning lanes at Rt9 and down Oak Street to handle the amount of cars waiting for the light.
RT9 should have a right turn lane installed North bound. South bound Rt 9 should have a Left turn lane, again long enough to handle the amount of cars wanting to make the left.
Lastly there has to be a Left turn arrow.
You cannot just drop a light on an intersection without planning and knowing what bad things will happen.
