Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic

Question:

My comment or request is to look at the traffic in Lakewood, south of New Central. Based on the new developments and construction occurring in this area, traffic is very heavy in the morning rush hour and afternoons. One area I foresee being an issue and before it gets too bad or heavily used, I was wondering if you can look into expanding cross street and maybe Hope Chapel road as that is an alternative route to head north (somewhat parallel to route 9). If those streets were double lanes or at the very least have large left turn lanes, it may really help some of the traffic issue. As well on Cross most of the real estate is set back so it shouldn’t be much of an issue taking over some of the land.

If you are not responsible for this, maybe you can pass this along to the person who is. Like me there are hundreds, if not thousands who feel the same way.

Thank you for listening and your anticipated help.

Response from Mayor Coles:

We are currently examining all traffic patterns in Lakewood. Our new consultant, Maser Engineering, is conducting traffic studies in town. They will be holding meetings with our residents to get input and ideas.

Cross Street is a County road, and is one of several roads that we have asked the county to make major improvements to, including widening it from Rt 9 into Jackson. We are also working on opening up Vine Street to create a new North South artery in town.

The County itself is in the process of putting together a traffic Master Plan for the whole County, with particular emphasis on Lakewood and the surrounding areas

Committeemen Lichtenstein & Ackerman have been working hard to address the traffic issues for the last couple of years. The entire committee is aware of the frustration & concern traffic issues cause our residents. We are committed to correcting as many of these issues as quickly as we can.

Thank you for writing

Ray

  1. Central Ave, please take away the shoulder lanes (on both directions) and make 2 lanes. Traffic at times is backup up from Rt 9 past Sunset Ave.

  2. Please extend the left turn from northbound new Hampshire to westbound cedarbridge many times during the day it’s a disaster like waiting 3 or 4 red to greens to get through

  3. Here’s my idea although it may sound a little crazy at first I think if you contemplate it properly you will see you’ll probably like it. I think during the hrs of 9-10:30, 2-4:30, 7-8:30 the main st, central ave, pine st, prospect ave lights should be blinking yellow. This will make traffic along rt 9 flow properly and cars will still be able to turn onto rt 9 since traffic will be moving so nicely there will be breaks in the traffic. I know it’s probably never gonna happen but I think it can work. And btw it costs nothing

  4. With all the wonderful building on Park Ave between county line and seventh street, the last chance of opening it to the west side of the tracks is closing, a chance to alleviate the traffic in this densely populated area KE”H.
Secondly people should know that Park Ave is not a Parkway or runway, it is dangerous , Hashem Yishmoreinu.
