Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic-related questions

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Thank you for your time.

1. Ever since the traffic light at Cedarbridge and Avenue of the States was installed, the traffic on Cedarbridge had been crazy. One thing i realized was that the 2 traffic lights, one at Avenue of the States and the second at Shenandoah are not coordinated with each other. I almost always get a red light at one of them. This causes traffic to slow down. Perhaps you would know the right person to contact to see to it that these 2 traffic lights, which are very close to each other, are coordinated with each other for a better traffic flow.

2. I see the township owned street cleaners driving around, when they’re going to and fro cleaning streets. They drive very slowly and cause traffic to backup behind them. I’ve seen other types of street cleaners (County, other cities, private contractors etc.) that seem to drive much quicker, and drive with the regular traffic. Is it possible to start using the other type of street cleaners?

Thank you.

Yaakov

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

We have already contacted the county and asked them to better synchronize these lights as well as several others around town. I will ask the engineer’s office to see how they are coming along.

I will ask Pat Donnelly of Public Works about the sweepers and ask him to consider this as we replace them.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Dear mayor,

We live in the new developments next to Vermont and the 70 there is a traffic light for cars but not for pedestrian. Unfortunately so many accidents happen there and people get killed. Is it possible top make a pedestrian light there and on corner Vermont and locust. The residents in the area will really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good evening,

I received the following response from Sgt. Work of Traffic & Safety – Vermont Avenue and Locust Street is covered by the Ocean County Engineering Department. I was told that that intersection is scheduled to be upgraded to a full traffic signal from the existing flashing light. I am sure the new signal will have a pedestrian crossing cycle, but I will let the Ocean County Engineering Department know of the request.

We will let the county know of the urgency of this request.

Thanks for reaching out

Ray

Question:

Did you ever try to make a left turn from county line road or kennedy blvd onto route 9 ???

There are turning lanes but no signal lights to enable anyone to turn. One or two cars can turn per light if lucky. Usually the second car to turn is on a red light already. It gets really backed up so that cars cant make a left out of gourmet glatt mall or cant even make a right turn from forest ave onto kennedy blvd or even make a left onto county line from forest ave.

A drvers nightmare- we need a better light system

Thanks for hearing me out.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Aidle,

I agree with you 100%. We have been asking the state to make changes at these Rt. 9 intersections for years. I was at the State DOT a few weeks ago for meetings about the changes coming to the southern parts of Rt 9 next year and brought these lights up again. They seemed to understand the urgency and we will keep pushing. I will ask the engineer to have the county tale a look at the County Line Rd Intersections again also.

Thanks

Ray

  1. we have been asking the state since 2010 first its rt 9, now its almost every are in town, face the new reality this down is a distater and very low quality of life

  2. Is there an email address to the state/county for us to email and express our concerns with these traffic issues? Maybe if they receive so many requests from citizens they’ll respond faster.

  3. The light at pine and mlk is fantastic. However it has to be adjusted a bit to have a green for mlk a few seconds longer. Pine street is totally clear at peak times which is great. But mlk is backed up sometimes all the way to John street! A few seconds longer shouldn’t affect pine too much and should help the mlk backup.

  4. I agree 100% with county line making a left turn onto rt9. It’s almost impossible while green, there’s no turning light, and they’re always cars coming the other way. It really needs fixing badly.

  5. Mr. Mayor, great job!
I agree %100 about left turn to rt. 9, can be done easily, just got to get the state on board.
    Thanks again Mr. MAYOR

  6. The problem is that Lakewood is the fastest growing town in NJ but is not considered a major city I.e. Trenton, Newark, etc. therefore the state doesn’t pay much attention to this “insignificant” town. The highest populated cities are usually the major towns in the state they are in which lakewood is unfortionately not in NJ. No one is rushing to help the Jews anyway.

  7. there also needs to be a no turn on Red at Kennedy Blvd turning right onto Squankum Road. I come down Squankum Road every day to make a left onto Countyline and drivers block the Intersection. I sat there the other day for 5 lights not fair. So I blocked the intersection to. something needs to be done there. By the back of Barneys auto and WAWA Help
