Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic Light or Crossing Guard

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr Mayor,

Thank you very much for your tireless devotion to the Lakewood community. At the intersection of Prospect St and Summer Ave it’s very difficult and dangerous to make a left turn onto Prospect. Would it be possible to either install a traffic light there or a crossing guard during the high traffic times when Peekaboo child care starts or ends. I would think from 8:40am until 9:15am and then again from 3pm until 3:45pm.

Thank you very much,

A Lakewood Resident

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning. We will check with the county and ask them to do a study for the light. I will also ask the chief about a crossing guard. Each time I receive a crossing guard request I I have to remind people that we really need more crossing guards. If anyone is interested in the extremely important position, please reach out to my office.

  1. Children who live nearby from todays Aron also don’t get bussing and finish at 3. It is extremely unsafe to cross and people don’t stop for Pedestrians. It might also help to do a pedestrian stop with the old as they did in many other areas

  2. Why do they allow a daycare there when there is no way for parents to safely pick up and drop off. That’s the problem with this town all decisions are made with no thought to the consequences.

Also Lakewood is the only town I’ve seen where crossing guards are used to direct traffic. That’s really not what crossing guards are intended for. They’re supposed to cross pedestrians.

You hit the nail right on the head.
