Question:
Good afternoon Mr. Mayor
I live on the North side of town (Park Ave. and County Line) . I recently heard from an acquaintance of the extremely successful Lakewood shuttle that operates mainly on the South side of town. I wanted to reach out and ask if it’s possible to expand this shuttle to cover more routes to more sections of Lakewood and at more times. I believe this would help with the hot button traffic issue in town and at the same time boost local businesses by transporting passengers to local shops, businesses and workplaces.
Thank you
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning,
We are always looking for ways to improve and increase the shuttle service in town. I will ask our transportation coordinator to look into current usage and see where we can increase service.
Thanks
Ray

Although the idea seems like a good one, it will not help with our traffic problems. Public transportation has been tried many times over the years. The fact is that most of the residents of Lakewood would prefer to drive rather than take a bus. Public transportation was never used by too many people. Even though it would be convenient for some people to have some sort of public transportation, it would not be enough to alleviate our traffic situation.
I believe many people do not necessarily prefer to drive and sit in traffic, however many people have children to drop off in the morning on their way to work/learn it is not always a possible option.
I don’t recall there ever being a full public transportation throughout Lakewood, which would allow full travel, what can it help to make it halfway to your location, I think that multiple lines with multiple vehicles running the line running throughout Lakewood, supported partially by advertising and small fee, or federally if used for schools like in Brooklyn, with the bus passes, and support transfers between the lines to get around, from the 70 to Chestnut to Cross to The 9 to County Line to Raintree to the 88 and so on, try it for a year with yellow busses and if it works invest in a larger operation, but the 13 year olds and older should eliminate a lot of picking up and dropping off and carpooling, and maybe some people don’t want to pay lease and insurance on more cars
What I love about this segment is that despite the generic noncommittal answers the mayor always gives, he then backs them up with action.
LOL! Really Serious!
Were can you find the routes of the Lakewood shuttle?
South lakewood is not so densely populated especially groceries and shopping are usually more at distance so shuttle’s are more commonly used. Let alone that many if not most of the southerners the women are not driving hence the need for public transportation.
Old Lakewood – everyone’s driving, grocery and shopping is walking distance who’d take the bus?
