Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Street Names in Lakewood

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr. Mayor:

I’ve noticed many times contractors are pressed and desperate for a street name at the very last minute. Many times they just choose their 3 year old’s name or names of cars. I’ve compiled a short list of people who have made a difference to our community that would be worthy of, at least a street name. I’m sure there’s many, many more. I hope the construction people will take note of this:

Bob Menendez – Governor

Patrick Moinehan a friend of the community

Meir Orlean – part founder Bais Yaakov Movement

Sugihara save many Jews from WWII

Zeev Rothschild community activist

Ariel Smith Ball Player

Skidmore founder Lakewood

Erastus Dickinson Named Lakewood

Grover Cleveland Died in Lakewood

Jerome Gertner former Judge many years

Daniel Spagnuola Officer who saved an 18 year old from burning vehicle

Mookie Wilson famous ball player

John Rockefeller donated OC Park

Chris Smith

Ari Weichbrod EMS

Sydney krupnick famous Real Estate

Ngô Đình Diệm Vietnam President exiled to Lakewood

Launa Mitchell oldest woman in America Lakewood resident

Sheldon Wolpin Mr Lakewood

Michael Inzelbach Self Explanatory

PG Waxman

Rabbi Murray Maslaton founder of the Sephardi Community in Lakewood

Nathan Tawil Saved Rabbi Kotler in Japan

Betzalel Klugmann – The Tzadik from Freehold

Rich Roberts

Robert Woods

Rabbi Trenk

I hope this helps:

Sincerely,

The Namer Guy

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thank you for this exhaustive list!

We do not have final say over new street names, but I will ask that prospective developers be given a copy of the list to see some possibilities

Ray

  1. Coles Way (oops. Have one already)
Flannery Ave – Got one too
    Kotler Blvd
Menash Street (to name the opening of Arlington that was vacated 🙂 )
    Vaad Lane
Developers Row (Get it? Row = fight)

  2. Why are tandem street names picked
I would suggest every neighborhood gets a theme.

Flowers: tulip lane, rose bush lane, sunflower street etc…

Herbs: sage lane. Rosemarie lane etc…

    Insects: butterfly rd, etc…

Prettier names and easy to pronounce

    etc…

  3. I love this letter. It is so nice that the writer thought of honoring important people with street names, as is commonly done. And his list is very nice, with a big mix of names that made me smile. Why did people have to criticize or make fun of this letter? Noone said this is the most important problem, but on the contrary, it’s a welcome break from the other complaint letters to the Mayor.

Personally, I love the Westgate streets named for cities in Europe – Brisk, Kletzk, etc. The flowers/insects/herbs idea is also good.
