Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Street lights

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

Thank you for the opportunity to contact you via this forum.

My husband and I have had a few near scares since we’ve recently moved to Lakewood. Driving down Forest Avenue, a very busy thoroughfare, can be a nightmare. The roads are very poorly lit and there are constantly pedestrians crossing, it is nearly impossible for drivers to see them at night.

Specifically there are 2 high traffic areas which are very dark, the Satmar shul (between 4th and 5th streets) and BMG campus (on 11th street), and it is extremely hard to notice people even if they are in the crosswalks.

From what I’ve heard, there have been numerous incidents already, how many more fatalities do we need to wait for to improve the lighting? I don’t know if this issue has previously been addressed, but safety is a priority and I believe it requires immediate attention. I know that public safety is a continuous effort and I thank you for working to keep our community safe and out of danger.

Warm wishes for a happy and healthy new year,

Breindy

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Breindy

Welcome to town.

We have been working hard to upgrade lighting throughout the entire town, as well as install them in areas where they were not previously located. Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein has been our main point of contact with JCP&L. I have asked him to look into any plans to improve the lights in these 2 areas.

Thanks

Ray

Until the lighting is upgraded, the big portable spot lights the Chaveirim use should be placed at the dark and dangerous corners and turned on at sunset. These portable lights will alleviate the the problem, at least temporarily.

Why don’t you address the real issues that affect everybody in town? Last I’ve checked traffic and over building was the issue that concerns most of the residents.

The portable lights are used many many times.! When placed and angled properly they do not blind you!
Of course this should only be a temporary fix! We all know what really has to be done! It makes no sense to just comment on the proper fix if obviously, ithat’s not happening! At least put up a temporary safety fix/long term fix.

I noticed street lights were fixed on avenue of the states. Looks like lighting issues are being worked on.

Can something be done about the lack of communication from DPW? How are residents supposed to know about changes in schedule etc..?? Maybe they can setup an email alert??
