Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Speed bumps

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr. Mayor,

Thank you so much for all that you do for this wonderful city. Could I kindly request some speed bumps on Henry street (between Cedar Street and the 9). People try to avoid the traffic from River Avenue and Pine Street and cut through our street. However, they go very fast, putting our children, as well ourselves in some danger. Some have complete disregard for safety and will go as far as jumping the curve or cutting off a bus to get to their destination.

To make it a one way street would also do a lot of good. I am simply requesting some speed bumps for the moment for the immediate safety of our children.

I appreciate your time and energy on every issue, and specifically this one.

Have a great day!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Judith,

I will ask Traffic & Safety to look into this request as well as other ways we can calm dozen traffic & keep the children safe.

Thanks

  1. Can we also get one on school garden street. People speed down clover and continue down school street. To make matters worse there’s a park across the street so there are constantly people crossing over and often children try to cross over without proper supervision. The street is an accident waiting to happen!! Can something please be done.

  2. Arlington is not navigable during busy times do to the narrow stretches that haves parking on both sides and can’t accomodate the through traffic. I use MLK to get from one part of Arlington to the other in the am.

  3. Can I get a tax right off for the new shocks I’ll need? With all the additional speed bumps on top of the existing potholes & terrible road conditions the vehicle wear and tear is out of control.
Extra stop signs work as well and do not kill your car and cause headaches. This was just done on Caranetta which was dealing with a similar situation.

    • Slow down and your shocks will survive. That is the purpose of the speed bump to slow you down so you don’t hurt someone.

  4. We live in a very busy town that runs on a very pressured timings (school,BMG,Bain hasddorim….) And the infrastructure is 30 years behind times causing people to take side streets and speed. I would suggest that you should teach your kids to be a defensive walker( very vigilant and not to play in the streets) BECAUSE SPEED BUMBS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!

  5. The township can provide some rear view cameras for peoples cars and vans. That would protect our children much more than a couple speed humps.
