Question:
Hi Mr. Mayor,
We all look forward to the summer as for many it means lighter school/work schedules and more time spent enjoying the outdoors. In particular, the children have a well deserved vacation from school and spend more time swimming, exercising, and enjoying the local camps. There are many camps located on Oak Street and thus there is an increase in traffic during the start and end times of camps. It would be great if the local Albert Ave/ Coles Way kids (pun intended) could walk home to get some much needed exercise and to relieve the traffic. However, there are only sidewalks on one side of Oak Street. It is very difficult to walk on the other side of Oak Street as the grass is very tall and the cars park on the shoulder so the kids need to walk around the cars. It is not a safe expedition for school age kids. Is it possible to have a crossing guard at the intersection of Funston Ave and Oak Street so the children can safely cross Oak Street to take advantage of the sidewalks?
We all appreciate your work and devotion to help make our town a safe place!
With much appreciation,
A local Albert Ave resident
Response from Mayor Coles:
Thanks for writing. We will look into expanding the sidewalks to both sides of Oak. In the meantime we will try to get the grass cut, make a safer path for pedestrians and see if we can get a crossing guard there part if the day.
We are always looking for Crossing Guards. if you know of anyone in the area who may be interested, please have the reach out to the PD or my office. It is an extremely important job.

Many find the sidewalks on the north side of oak along the schools useless for summer day time use, as there is not a drop of shade as every bit of shade was taken away to build school buildings (a good thing) but trees can be replanted along the sidewalk for shade.
Thank you to our special Mayor who really cares.
On that note, Albert Ave has received sidewalks a few years ago. However, they were placed on the side where there are barely any through streets. The other side of the block hosts the main community shul and 99% of the homes. In order to get to shul, we have to cross the main ave and then cross back again. We cannot allow our children to walk to the next block because of lack of sidewalk on the busy Avenue. Adding sidewalks to the other side of Albert Ave would greatly improve the whole neighborhood’s quality of life.
Wow! Mayor Coles and Lakewood Township are truly one of kind. There was already a crossing guard stationed there this morning to cross my kids!
For the safety of our children, the sidewalk on County-line between Hope and Pine Park is completely covered with overgrown grass
I am blown away by how quickly a crossing guard was placed at this intersection! Great work, Mr. Mayor!
