Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Rt. 9 and Pine Street

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Dear Mr. Mayor,

First I would like to thank you for all your hard work on behalf of our city.

There has been talk about aligning the intersection of Route 9 and James/Pine St. in order to create left turning lanes. Why don’t they just leave the intersection as is, but James and Pine should be green at alternate times – similar to the light pattern at route 9 and Cross/Chestnut. This will allow traffic turning left onto route 9 ease through the intersection with out having to worry about any oncoming traffic.

Thank you,

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning Hadasa

I think you have an excellent idea. I do believe that the intersection needs to be realigned to allow a better traffic flow. There is no reason why alternating lights could not be used in the meantime as well as when their work is done. I will ask our engineers to talk to the state DOT, since they have the final say on how the lights are controlled.

  1. Not such a great idea the traffic on the 9 is backed up you’ll end up with cars making a left turn blocking the oncoming traffic when it turns green for them…and obviously your going to have to shorten the lights so will pine, James get more backed up? Most cars are going straight..

  2. I agree with comment #1. Very very often the 9 is quite back up there (unlike by Chestnut) and only one or two cars can make a left from James on to route 9 during each green light. So it’s not so much that oncoming traffic from Pine makes the issue. It’s more that there is no room on the 9 so cars need to wait.
