Question:
Hi Mr. Mayor,
Driving down Route 88/Ocean Ave from New Hampshire Ave until Clover Street is bumper to bumper traffic and is the new route 9 (or worse). If a car is making a left turn onto clover street the entire 88 gets backed up. There is no shoulder to go around any left turning vehicles. What should take a 2 minute drive took me 20 minutes today and I am not exaggerating! Can we please get an update about what is being done about this? It may be a good idea for the county officials to come by one day at about 9AM or 3 PM and see what it’s about and realize this is a priority.
Thank you.
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning
We are currently working with the state DOT to improve intersections to add lights and turning lanes.
Thanks
Ray
Question:
Dear Mr Mayor:
This is actually a follow up to my previous question regarding E/V , Tesla charging points.
So yesterday as I was coming off the parkway and had 4% juice left, my heart was palpitating as I just barely made it to my destination.
On the way, I thought of a great spot for a Tesla charging station, the Department of Public Works. There , there is plenty of room , won’t cause traffic (and would actually be an income to the township).
With over 1500 Teslas in Lakewood and another 1500 in Jackson, I think this would be a great start.
What do you think?
Sincerely,
David T
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning
It was mind boggling to read that 20% of EV’s in the state are registered in Lakewood.
We are in the process of having several charging stations installed in the townships park and ride facility on Swarthmore Ave.
We are also planning on installing some downtown when we redevelop the parking lot across the street from town hall.
Additionally we are researching grants that would help private businesses install them in parking lots.
Thanks
Ray
Question:
Hello mr mayor,
I am writing today to thank you immensely for all your efforts to make this project a reality! We were overjoyed to pass by Sunset Park and see the new rubber floor under the playground! We can’t wait to start enjoying it and look forward to seeing it installed at other parks around town.
Thanks again for all your work!
Response from Mayor Coles:
Thank you
I am glad we were able to start this process at Sunset and that you are happy with the results.
We are looking forward to converting additional parks as soon as we complete our current equipment upgrades.
Thanks
Ray

A simple fix for the Rte. 88 traffic is to alternate eastbound and westbound traffic at the Clover intersection.
Most of the backup is caused by cars turning left blocked by oncoming traffic.
If westbound would wait, while eastbound has flowing traffic and vice versa, traffic would not backup despite the need to wait longer at the light.
That’s a very good solution!
For Tesla owners, besides the chargers at GSP exit 100, and at Wawa on the 9 in Howell, there is a new charger on the 70 by GSP exit 89, for those coming from that direction.
For those that remember with nostalgia the gas rationing during the 1970’s (based on even/odd last digit of your license plate) perhaps we can do that with traffic on the major problem roads based on names. A few letters will be allowed each day & only those with names starting with those letters will be allowed to use these roads.
I think this will greatly reduce much of the traffic.

Dear Mr.Coles,
Thank you for dedicated and unwavering service to the Lakewood community.
I am wondering what can be done to improve the number of parks per capita. Recently I had a friend staying on Albert and she told me that closest park in walkable distance is a private park in a development.
I’m wondering if a nice amount of the forests that are still precious untouched lands on pine and vine can be allocated to become a public park before it is sold off to be more developers.
Our children and families are in great need of more accessible open areas, sports fields, tennis courts/basketball courts, and high quality play equipment that can accommodate large numbers of children and high usage.
Thank you for always looking for ways to improve Lakewood!
