Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Rt. 70 and New Hampshire Ave.

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Thank you for your responsiveness to our community’s concerns.

The exit ramp from 70E onto New Hampshire Avenue leads to a busy road with no traffic light. Those cars trying to make a left turn onto New Hampshire have to dodge across hoping for room in the left lane while traffic continues past in the right lane on New Hampshire. There are also often long lines waiting to make that left turn. Is it possible to get a traffic light there for the cars exiting 70E?
Thanks,

A Lakewood commuter

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

The intersections on New Hampshire from Chestnut to RT. 70 are being completely redesigned. It is a joint project of the County & State. At a recent meeting with the county engineer, we were told the design is complete & waiting for a final sign off from the state. We have been urging the county to make this project a top priority once final approvals are given. The Scoop has previously posted the design plan. Maybe they can show it once again

Thanks for reaching out

Stay Safe

Ray

  1. New Hampshire and Chestnut is even worse. So many accidents there trying to make a left turn and longer lines than ever. This is an emergency to place a light there that perhaps synchronizes with the 70 light. The white box is not respected and it is dangerous and fearful each time you need to make a left turn.
    Thanks

  2. Why not just make it a Right Turn only like many other intersections in town? this will reduce the wait on someone trying to cross 3 lanes of traffic when you are trying to turn left. Its always been a busy intersection, ever since i can remember and the influx of residents and schools makes it so much worse. If there is a calmer time of day you can relax the RTO but it needs to be done.

I sent a request numerous times to ask the mayor about repaving Twin Oaks Drive after 22 years and I got no response.
There are also many pot holes.

    Please get a response.

  4. I think that if they would open the new road on Vermont from chestnut to the 70, all these problems at New Hampshire and Chestnut would be solved, what are they waiting for? It’s been over a year since it has been done!
