Question:
Good evening.
I am pleased to have another opportunity to communicate my concerns to the local government in attempt to help improve the quality of lifestyle in Lakewood. Unfortunately, there is a problem with the roads in which only progressively worsens and affects the community here who reside in the Pinewoods and Crossroads x East Kennedy area. It’s an extremely damaged patch in the roads that is causing damages on our vehicles. I just had to get my car fixed, partially due to this problem, where it’s main affects is the front end/suspension of the vehicle. On top of the inflation, now we have to worry about the cost of vehicles damage due to negligence of the terrible roads, adding another level of frustration and stress. It’d be a massive improvement and of great appreciation of the people here if it was fixed.
Thank you for your understanding and your time.
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good afternoon
I asked our engineer and public works director to inspect the road there and arrange the necessary repairs.
Thank you for advising me of this.

Question:
Dear Honorable Mayor Coles
I was just wondering. I see that lake wood was able to procure permission to put a traffic light at oak street and that evergreen shopping center. So I was wondering how come it’s not possible to get a left turn signal at pine and route nine. Could you please look into that? Thank you very much.
Marvin
Response from Mayor Coles:
We have been asking the state to allow us to add a signal there and at several other intersections along Rt 9. At the current time, they will only allow signals to be added at Oak & Broadway.

Question:
I live in Westgate area of Lakewood. I live across from the shopping center, which means I have to cross Hillside Blvd. I am a Senior Citizen and don’t drive. Cars are coming from 6 different directions. Many people have had accidents and needed a hospital stay. We need traffic lights, stop signs etc. It’s a very busy area with many children running across to do shopping for their mother’s.
Please help us. I can’t cross unless I hold up my hands. Cars do not stop for pedestrians.
Thank you. Hoping to get results.
Response from Mayor Coles:
I am working with the chief and traffic and safety to increase enforcement and come up with a traffic calming plan.

Question:
Dear Mr mayor , I live near the corner of Rt 9 and James st. Everyday tractor trailers traveling south on Rt 9 struggle to make a left turn onto pine st. As the side walk jolts out making it a very tight turn. Often they get stuck and have to back up causing major delays .(some jump the side walk and successfully complete the turn)I now see work going on at that corner and unfortunately they haven’t spoken to us neighbors about the issues of the corner. I’m hoping the Mayor could deliver this message- the side walks need to be shaved down aprox 4 feet to alleviate this issue (btw there’s lots of room to do this) Thanks Mr. Mayor for everything
Response from Mayor Coles:
We are working with the state to improve this intersection. As part of the current improvements going on along 9, the DOT has promised to widen and realign this intersection to eliminate these problems.
Thanks
Ray

That comment about Westgate, that person is 100% correct.
I once complained about it and nothing got done.
Thank you to the Mayor that it is being addressed now.
Increasing enforcement isn’t going to solve the problem here. Unfortunately it’s poor planning and there isn’t a way to turn back the clock, short of constructing a new exit to Westgate to alleviate the traffic.
I was referring to putting a traffic light near Westgate shopping Plaza so the precious children don’t have to wait a long time until they can safely cross this extremely wide road.
Can somebody please write in to the mayor about the length of the red light by Williams and prospect. It takes forever to turn green heading towards cedar. And also the lanes are not aligned either.
is there a place on the Lakewood Township website to write in ideas – the same as the people are posting on the Lakewood Scoop?
dear reb Meir , unfortunately there is no one to talk to or to write to, this is the issue with this town
Lakewood needs to switch to a ward system so that every neighborhood has a dedicated representative to bring their specific concerns to the table.
While the mayor means well and addresses a few random issues from different areas, this approach isn’t fair or sustainable.
For some reason, the Chasidish communities, which only recently settled here, already have liaisons in City Hall, but most of us remain unrepresented.
A ward system would ensure that concerns are addressed, even when your question isn’t selected by the “Ask the Mayor” forum.
Westgate is private property, therefore our of jurisdiction. It’s a large rental space. So technically the management needs to coordinate with the county.
