Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Recycling Trucks

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Honorable Mayor,

First of all, thank you so much for this forum. It really helps us speak up when necessary.

We have a communal garbage and recycling pickup in Lakewood Commons. We appreciate the prompt pickups. One thing that bothers me is that when the recycling trucks come to pick up, the cleanup is insufficient. Many times we are left with strong odors from rainwater that spills into the street, and small items including glass are almost always left in middle of the street and close to the sidewalk where people walk. I noticed that they sometimes sweep up after themselves, but apparently not enough. My 3 year old son almost got cut on glass left over from them, and it is very easy for a car to have it’s tires cut if it drives over the glass.

Please advise if we can have this issue corrected.

Thank you for all your hard work that you expend for our town!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

I spoke with Pat Donnelly about this. The only way to solve this problem will be to work together with Public Works & the residents. He is going to reach out to the HOA. If the drivers notice that they have lost some trash, many times they will get out and sweep up their mess. Other times, things are on the ground already and this is where the Association comes in. The only way to contain the odors is for the maintenance staff to power wash the area once in a while. The drivers would have no way to do this. The same goes for things that fall out or are left out of the containers once in a while. I am confident that working together we will be able to address both the safety & odor issue,

Thanks

Ray
