Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Pickleball Courts

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

Thank you so much for everything that you do for Lakewood, and for being so responsive and for making yourself available with this column.

Our family really enjoys playing Pickleball. Almost all ages in our family can have a volley, regardless of skill level, and have so much fun. Little kids to adults can play, and feel good about being able to have a volley, and get exercise. It is the fastest growing sport in America. I even read about plans to bring indoor pickleball courts to indoor malls.

Bey Lea Park in Toms River has 6 outdoor pickleball courts. Because of the demand, they asked Toms river to expand it to 12 courts, and Toms River agreed.

It has been hard for us to find good options for us for indoor pickleball when the weather does not allow outdoor play near Lakewood. I noticed that other parts of NJ have more options. I read that Lakewood has plans for an indoor sports facility. Can I please submit for suggestion for Lakewood to consider incorporating indoor pickleball into the new facilities plans? And maybe perhaps an outdoor pickleball court or courts option somewhere?
An indoor gym can also serve the dual purpose as a gym and indoor pickleball court. Removeable nets can be used, and lines and net curtains to contain the ball can also be used.

I would be happy to show the sport to you to see firsthand the appeal.

Thank you so much,

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Kenneth

My wife has become a Pickleball player recently & keeps threatening to bring me along!

We will definitely consider adding some courts to the bubble when it is constructed.

I believe we have a few courts in Pine Park. I will also ask public works to see if any of our other parks or playgrounds could accommodate them

Thanks

Ray

  1. Thank you. Please be advised that pickleball is somewhat of a noisy sport, as the whacking and thumping of the ball can be fairly disruptive. I would recommend that parks considered for pickleballs be restricted to those that are not in close proximity to residential areas. For example, Pine Park is a great choice, but more community-based parks such as Sunset Park, School Garden, etc. may create disturbances for neighbors.

  2. Mr Mayor

are we able to build basketball gyms in a bubble, I organize a few basketball games at night and I could get 200 men every night. Many of these men can’t exercise any other way, its simply saving lives!!

  3. Pickleball courts???
There are literally not enough playgrounds for kids in many parts of Lakewood due to overdevelopment, and we are talking about building courts with taxpayer money for an obscure, niche sport that 98% of this town has never even heard of?
