The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Good morning, Mr. Mayor.
Thank you for the pedestrian safety campaign where cars get ticketed for not yielding to pedestrians. I greatly appreciate what you and our wonderful police officers do to make our town a safe place for its residents.
Would you be able to create a similar campaign to pull over drivers talking on their phones?
Thank you.
Response from Mayor Coles:
I am also very grateful for the wonderful police force we have in town.
The chief has made eliminating distracted driving a priority for quite some time. I will ask him to reinforce this with the officers.
Thanks
Ray

If there is a campaign to address distracted driving in Lakewood, the police, who you rarely see other then when they are at the sight of an accident, must be distracted themselves. I have been driving in and through Lakewood for years and have never actually seen someone pulled over live, when literally 6 out of every 10 cars are being driven by somebody with a phone to their ear.
Bumper7642, you took the words right out of my mouth!!!!
How about a campaign against kids on bikes and scooters riding on the wrong side of the road, crossing the street against the light, not walking their bikes across the street, not wearing helmets, etc….
Talking on a cell phone while driving? Read this article in The Lakewood Scoop from back in 2011. https://thelakewoodscoop.com/news/police-chief-rob-lawson-police-could-easily-issue-1000-tickets-a-day-featured-story/ I had to type the url in because TLS would not let me copy/paste it.
I never use my phone when I’m driving
