Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Pedestrian Safety

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question: Dear Mayor Coles,

Thank you for all your hard work! To be specific, thank you for installing sidewalks throughout most of Lakewood! However, I’m sure that you’re aware that the job is far from over. I fully acknowledge that it takes time, money and lots of bureaucratic red tape to complete the job.

The corner of East County Line Road & Park Place St. (Between Four Corners Bagel Shop & the Rachmastrivka Synagogue, across the street from Wawa) is in desperate need of a sidewalk for pedestrians. The house on that corner has a front lawn that extends to the road. The perimeter of the lawn is decorated with bushes, making it impossible to safely walk along the road.

A couple of years ago those “beautiful bushes” claimed the life of my late neighbor, Rabbi Weisberger. I, along with all of Rabbi Weisberger’s neighbors assumed that the Township/County would get the message clear. Now, a couple of years later, a sidewalk still hasn’t been installed at that corner.

Therefore, I would like to please ask you to reach out to the County and give priority to my request so that no more casualties happen at this location. A sidewalk is needed ASAP!

Thank you for all your hard work.

Sincerely yours,

A Lakewood resident

Response from Mayor Coles: Good afternoon

Thank you for bringing this back to my attention. I have asked our manager to look into this right away & see how quickly we can get a sidewalk through that area.

In about 2000 the town planned to cut Lakewood up into 11 district and put sidewalks in each 1` year at a time. What happened?

as a resident of that neighborhood I agree with the writer about the important need for a sidewalk there. there are lots of young children and adults always walking there (four corners, wawa, etc.)I think that a number of years ago the county even paid each homeowner along that stretch of county line to purchase a piece of their property so the land already belongs to the county
Thank you Mayor!
