Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Paving 2 Main Roads Simultaneously?

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor,

Although we appreciate all the milling and paving being done around town, I question why two main roads are being done at the same time. Both 14st and North Lake Dr are closed from Cedar Row to Hope Chapel. Those are both 2 main roads out of the 14th st area. This is causing significant delays and chaos on the side streets.

Although I have no doubt you will look into this I wonder if there is a bigger lack of communication going on. A few months ago, I reached out via TLS about road work being done on Cedar Bridge at 3:00pm – the busiest time and you did change and fix it. But these types of scheduling snafus keep happening. Maybe we need to see why the it’s happening in the first place and not fix it after.

Thank you for having this open forum for us to ask questions etc.

And while this is a complaint – we really do appreciate all your hard work and effort for our town.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

We always try to schedule paving jobs to avoid as much disruption as possible. Many times we do them during the holidays or in the summer when many folks are away. In this case we have a long scheduled township paving job which conflicted with a job being done by NJ American. It was too late to pull our contractor off the job when we discovered the simultaneous job being done nearby. We will look into how this happened and do our best to make sure it is not repeated in the future.

Stay Safe

Ray

  1. It wasn’t just the simultaneous jobs, it was that there were NO signs regarding a detour. I got to Forest and Fourteenth and the only way to go was back to Route 9 and make a LEFT! A few days later I drove down S Lake and had the same issue! no signs of a detour until I got to the roadblock. It caused major delays for many people. In the future PLEASE put up signs a few streets before notifying of the detour.
