Question:
Hello Mr. Mayor
Thanks for this forum. It is very impressive to see how you really take action on the points people bring up… It brings a smile to my face when I see suggestions mentioned here implemented around our town 🙂
I was wondering if you could possibly provide some clarification on the following issue.
It’s no secret that our roads here in Lakewood are in really bad shape, and many are desperately in need of repaving.
Last winter, there was a list released of roads to be paved during the following spring, some were done, but not all on the list were completed.
My question is this- is there any sort of rotation schedule as far as what gets paved and when? It seems that many of our road haven’t been paved in 20+ years.. and with only one or 2 dozen scheduled per spring, and then even that not completed… how is this being addressed globally?
I know that the township is now working to try and keep up… but are there any plans to catch up?
Another point- many roads are not done because of open permits… but that’s an issue…there are areas that will always have something going on.. does that mean they will never be repaved? How do you address areas that are badly in need of repair… yet the building doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon?
I would appreciate if you could share some details here.
Thanks. Tova
Response from Mayor Coles:
Hi Tova
That’s a lot to unpack!
I had a survey done of all out township roads and had them graded A through F (yes there are A roads in town). We are in the process of coming up with a plan that can address the F roads and get them into good shape without ignoring roads that are in better shape so they do not degenerate further. The plan is to get all our roads on a rotation so that we don’t wind up with a similar situation down the road.
Some of the roads that were not gotten to last year were due to sidewalks and curbs being added and just running out of time before the winter hit.
The permit issue is a huge concern. We have put off some paving due to permits being open. We don’t want to prohibit someone form building their home or adding gas or other utilities. We have decided to issue notices of paving further out, so that people have the ability to get the work done before we do the streets. We also instituted way for roads to be opened but properly repaired using infrared patches which melt the pavement back together to prevent it from crumbling.

I sent in a letter last year about Arlington/Ashley area needing to get repaved. It is atrocious. Nothing has been done so far.
Thank you for the paving that is going on on Williams and buttell!!
Please have them add median and shoulder lines painted after the paving is done.
Was Lexington Ave left off of the rating survey since it’s a G?
Is there a way to see the list?
Arlington should be opened to pine!
I have written in regarding Lexington Ave numerous times yet I always get the same response. We’re looking into it, it’s under review, we’ll get the engineers to take a look at it, the water company is still doing their repairs…and so it goes on and on. The mayor means well but the pace at which roads get repaved in this town would make a snail look speedy! Lexington Ave is nothing less than an embarrassment to this town. It belongs in a third world country. Here you have state of the art office towers going up on Ave of the States & just a few minutes away you have an integral north south thoroughfare that is atrocious beyond words. The contrast is striking. It seems to me, that the powers that be that run this town just don’t get it! They don’t realize that almost nothing is as crucial to normal functioning of a city as its ROADS!!!
