Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Noise Issue

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr. Mayor;

First of all thank you for giving us this venue to be able to communicate with you. We have an issue in our neighborhood. There are parties very often and have no issue to have music playing until all hours, for hours at a time. Is there anything to be done other then calling the police to complain? They come down and make them stop or lower the music, but many times they restart it or raise it once the police are gone.

Thank you,

Rivka

Response from Mayor Coles:

I have asked the chief to have the PD make note of calls like this and ask the officers to stop by later in the evening to make sure the noise complaints have not started up again.

Thanks & Stay safe

Ray

  1. Maybe the neighbors should take turns, I was thinking maybe on Friday bring to these people some hot potato kugel. Maybe even once a month and then on Purim and maybe Chanuka time. Maybe this way , they might respect us.
    Once Mashiach comes, this issue will become a non-issue. Temporarily until Mashiach comes, let’s try to communicate with them in a respectful manner.

  2. You could have simply just said neighbors without mentioning
    ethnicity, that really doesn’t make a difference,
    Just in case you forgot we are in gulas in addition we have our own times of the year like purim where we are load and rowdy until a lot later than those parties, our simchas like vorts etc. in our homes that keep the block up late at night sometimes.
    My suggestion is get a noise machine and just remember we do not own our neighborhoods

  3. WIth all due respect to “a Bisel Sechel” – don’t judge another until you step into his place. Perhaps you don’t live in such a neighborhood – but I do. You cannot compare Purim which is one day a year (which gets quiet by 11:30 in my neighborhood) to neighbors who play VERY VERY LOUD music for hours on end – many times until 2 AM(!!) EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND (when the weather is nice enough to be outside)!!!

    It is beyond difficult to tolerate and not much recourse because even if you are lucky enough that police do show up, they turn the music back on shortly after the police leave.

    • I agree! Purim is once a year but many weekends every spring and summer they play music till 1-2 AM msny times its friday night that we cant even call police! a noise machine doesn’t help when your entire house vibrates from the music….
