Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Multiple traffic-related questions

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Hi

On Central Ave and River Ave there’s crazy backups because the traffic light on Central are too short not allowing the traffic to flow properly.. Can they be re-synced to allow more cars to turn on to River Ave from Central?

Thank you

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

We have been asking the state & county to resolve this issue as well as implement additional traffic improvements at this & many more intersections. I will ask the manager to follow up with both & see if we can get some cooperation.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Dear Mayor,

Thank you for all your efforts in everything you do!

Can you please put a light pole at the corner of Farady and Cross? It is an extremely dark corner and very dangerous to make turns on at night.

Thank You,
Alex

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Alex. I will put in the request with JCP&L. I can’t guarantee how long it will take but we will try to expedite it.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

I am aware that this is not a township road as I already emailed it to the township many years ago and they said they forwarded it to the right place. It is still not fixed and can cause a very dangerous accident.

Basically, the light on Hope Chapel and North Lake and South Lake are mixed up. When a car is trying to make a left turn from Hope Chapel onto North Lake Drive and is waiting in the intersection for the flow of traffic to stop and the light turns red, they rightfully think they can turn. Unfortunately, this is not the case as the traffic light on Hope Chapel and North Lake going towards County line is still green for about 7 seconds. On South Lake, it is the reverse as the light turns red (going towards North Lake) when it still shows 3 seconds left. In this case, it is not dangersous, as those turning left are not turning against traffic.

I can’t imagine this taking too long to fix. It’s just a quick switch of the signals of North Lake and South Lake, both going towards County Line.

(The left turning signal may also be mixed up as if you’re on South Lake turning onto South Lake, it usually only turns green if there is someone on Norht Lake.)

Thank you for your time and checking into this matter.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Toby,

I will pass this along to our engineers right away & see if I can figure out why it hasn’t been addressed and what we can do to take care of it as soon as possible. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Take Care

Question:

Hello Hon. Mayor!

It seems to me and others that opening the little stretch of road into Arlington Ave., a map street, would reduce a lot of the bottleneck at the corner of Pine and MLK.

Would that be an appropriate fix?

Thank you for all you do,

Eric

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Eric,

That is one of the ides we are looking at to improve traffic flow along Pine St.

Thanks

Question:

Dear Mayor,

I’m sure this issue was brought up, yet I have never seen a response to it. The intersection of Chestnut st. and New Hampshire Ave. is oftentimes fraught with traffic, causing lengthy delays for drivers attempting to turn left from Chestnut st. Moreover, the high traffic on south-bound New Hampshire Ave. prevents drivers (north-bound) turning left from New Hampshire Ave. onto Chestnut st. from seeing the automobiles leaving Chestnut st. I have witnessed quite a few collisions between those drivers and seen dozens of near accidents. I propose erecting a traffic light that is in sync with the adjacent traffic light on rt. 70, thus, ensuring and easy flow of traffic especially for those turning left. What can the township do?

Thank you.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon.. I did address this a week or so ago, but I’m not sure if it has been printed yet. We fought for years to get a light here. The state & county have finally agreed to install a light here. It is currently being designed by the state. We have asked that it be expedited as quickly as possible, but most likely we will not see it until next year.

  1. Regarding the the North lake and hope chapel intersection i had your same question.. RECENTLY they put up a sign obove the traffic light stating that the opposite traffic has a longer green light

  2. WOW this mayor is a really gr8 guy!
He gives up a lot of his time for our questions and seems to not just respond but also to really help out
And I doubt he’s just bored sitting in the office trying to fined things to do in this #CITYoflkwd.
I really like reading these q and A’s wen they are posted and then seeing how fast it’s taken cear of
    Tyvm Mr. Mayor!!

  3. If they open Arlington they must put speed bumps throughout the whole street. It’s not possible for it to be safe with the amount of kids playing and all the houses so close to the streets.

  4. I’ve seen a few near accidents on hope chapel at North Lake Drive.
Opening Arlington Avenue to Pine would mean eliminating parking on Arlington in some parts of Arlington it would require eliminating parking on both sides of the street. That would be an untenable situation, as the houses were originally built with in adequate parking relying on streetside parking. This would be a nightmare for Arlington Avenue residents.

  5. @ #3 – is arlington the only street in lakewood that has kids? i am not understanding why the issue of kids only comes up when it refers to arlington…
