Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Multiple Traffic-Related Questions

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi,

The corner of Hope Chapel and New Central would benefit from a blinking light at night. There is no traffic at night. Also, that intersection would benefit from changing the timing. The green light allowing the new central traffic to move is much too long. Cars wait on hope chapel for about 15 seconds without any cars passing on new Central.

Thank You,

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thank you for taking the time to write

This intersection is controlled by the county. I will ask engineering to make a formal request they look into these changes.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Hi.

The Traffic that gets backed up because of the light at the intersection of James and Cross Street is simply a disaster. There is traffic there all day , and at certain times there can be 100 cars waiting in each direction on Cross Street. When will this stop?? It’s totally unacceptable. If a car tries to make a left turn from Cross on to James , 100 cars sit and wait.

This is unacceptable that this wasn’t addressed yet.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

This is a county road. We have asked them com up with some solutions yo this. We have engineering & traffic and safety working on it as well.

Question:

Recently I have been driving a lot by the intersection of Hillside Blvd and New Egypt Rd, and I noticed that the traffic light is very lengthy in favor of New Egypt Rd. especially at night when there is much less traffic. Is it possible to have the light change more frequently to give the vehicles on Hillside less waiting time? Is there a censor in each direction that can assist with the flow of traffic?

Thanks!

Response from Mayor Coles:

I will ask our engineers to see how the signal is controlled & possibly upgrade it if we cannot make the necessary timing changes.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Hi Mr Mayor and thank for this forum to help the community. I was wondering whether the newly activated light at Massachusetts and Prospect will be temporary and replaced with new traffic lights. I have noticed some issues over the first few days due to it being old. It is higher then typical traffic lights and can’t always be seen, not everyone realizes it was changed to a regular light due to the fact its been a blinking light for years and that’s been causing people to make (dangerous)stops at green lights that were previously blinking red and people going through red lights that were previously blinking yellow. Also one of the original issues at that corner might have become worse which is attempting to make a left from Prospect onto Massachusetts which would be greatly helped with a turning signal that would also make a newer light necessary. Thank you very much.

Response from Mayor Coles:

The lights are not temporary. many times when new lights are installed, some old problems are resolved and some new ones creep up. We have the county looking at the toing of the lights as well as turning lanes & arrows.

The reason the light blinks for a while is to get people used to the idea that there is a light now. Once the light went “live” the township sent out many alerts through our police department and asked the media publications in town to let folks know as well.

Question:

Hi Mr Mayor,

I hope all is well.

Just now I sat in traffic for over 30 minutes! trying to get from Carasaljo Dr on to Hope. There was a line of well over 100 cars. It usually takes about 3-4 minutes during peak times.

But today they’re doing some sort of work so they closed a lane on hope.

I understand the catch 22 that we want a well kept town without the traffic. In this case though I think it could’ve been done much better. They could’ve minimized the lane closure and utilized the median… they could’ve done it at off peak hours… the possibilities are endless if only there would’ve been a bit of thought out into it.

If there’s anything that can be done still now to ease the bottleneck it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for being so attentive to our needs!

Response from Mayor Coles:

I spoke to the chief and he will make sure the lane shut downs do not begin until 10:00AM until they repairs are completed.

Sorry for the problem this morning.

Ray

  1. Something’s fishy about what’s going on at Massachusetts and prospect.
The intersection was supposed to be totally redone, with a wider approach on Massachusetts and a dedicated right turn and left turn only lanes in both directions on Prospect.

This was all in the plans, made public at the time of construction.

There was work being done for years, yet now they just turned on old light and called it a day???

Are we going to get those new lanes and turning lights?

    • After years of waiting for a light, the situation is little improved. We need wider lanes & left & right turning signals. I hope we don’t need to wait another few years for the light to be of benefit.

    • Remember every street, road, Ave and highway that runs through Lakewood either belongs to the county or state. That’s the easiest way to give you an answer when you don’t have a clear answer.

  2. Mr Coles we all know that you are a great mayor but you’re the mayor of Lakewood and Hope Chapel and New Central Ave meet up in Jackson. But nothing changes, the road belongs to the county as usual.

  3. the county , state ,the county the state if route 9 belongs to state and everything else to the county so our hands are tied all over town then where heck do the tens of millions of dollars go that comes in from taxes ?
