Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Multiple Questions

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Dear Mayor,

First want to thank you for the new light installment on Gudz and Lakewood New Egypt. It was badly needed.

The light does not have a sensor and gives green left turning arrows every time. The whole light should be using sensors so that lakewood new Egypt remains green unless there is someone waiting on gudz. During non traffic hours it is very necessary to have sensors.

Also would like to request a 4 way stop sign at the corner of New Central and Gudz. There are many accidents at that corner. (not another light please)

Thank you so much! Really appreciate all you do for LAKEWOOD!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon,

I spoke with the county engineer about this. He told me it is a temporary light installed as a stop gap until a permanent light with turn arrows can be installed.

I will ask Traffic and Safety for a report on the stop sign you request.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Hi Mr. Mayor,

Thank you for everything that you do for our town!
I live on Squankum Rd. and have 2 questions to ask.

1. I wanted to know if it’s possible to have sidewalks added to 2 small areas- both on busy streets.

A. Squankum Rd.- right where Ninth St. hits Squankum there’s a small patch of missing sidewalk that causes people to have to walk in the street which is quite busy and dangerous.

B. E County Line Rd.- right when you turn from Park Place onto E Countyline there’s a small patch of missing sidewalk which again causes people to have to walk in the street which is very busy and dangerous especially for small children.

2. I also wanted to know if anything can be done about the drainage issue on Squankum Rd. every time there’s a big storm it floods really bad.

Thank you,
Yitzy

Response from Mayor Coles:

We are always adding sidewalks & like to fill in areas as much as possible. I will make sure our engineer inspects the areas and see if we can add it to our list.

However, both of these are county roads. The county works well with us when we want to install sidewalks alongside their roads. Sometimes, when they have future plans to widen or expand the road, they will not give us the Ok to proceed. In certain spots, we add asphalt walkways as a way to provide safe passage until they make their final decisions

I forwarded your drainage concern to the county engineer to see what plans they have to address it.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Hi Mayor Coles. It was a pleasure meeting you with my grandsons at the LBA official softball opening last week. The oldest was thrilled having a catch with you & signing his baseball. Thanks for taking pictures with us.

Want to know if there are plans for a light at Vine & Pine now that Vine is open. Also when can we expect a left turn lane at Cedarbridge onto Clover?

Thank you.

Tzvi

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks

I had a great time with him. I doubt I would have reached home plate if he hadn’t been there to warm me up!

There is a light coming for Vine and Pine. We are also planning to widen Pine sometime next year

Committeeman Lichtenstein set up a meeting with the state DOT a couple of weeks ago. We took a bus tour of all state highways in town. We discussed the need for improvement to that intersection and at Rt 88

Thanks again

Ray

Question:

All the ditches/wholes at the small and large parking spots on south lake drive and North lake drive need repair. Filling them up with stones is not sustainable. They r in need of substantial real repair. Thanking u in advance.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks

I have asked public works to do repairs.

We cannot pave with asphalt due to DEP restrictions.

  1. The County has had a deed of easement since 6 Dec 2007 for the widening of E. County Line Rd. Doesn’t seem they are too much in a hurry for sidewalks.
