The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Hi,
There are now lights out on Trudy, Frances, and Lewin. Is there anything that can be done ? Doesn’t seem that contacting JCP&L does anything. I know you’ve tried reaching out to them about the slow response rate, but it’s been months that I’m trying to get them to come down.
Another thing that you’ve helped out with in the past, is to have the gravel filled on the street/ path on Frances st. leading to Massachusetts. I know eventually the street will be paved but there’s huge potholes there now. If it can be filled temporarily it would be a great help.
Thank you for all you do.
Response from Mayor Coles:
My office is in contact with JCPL daily, trying to get them to repair as many lights as possible in as short a time as possible. We are extremely unhappy with the response time and are looking into other options as well.
I will ask Public works to straighten out the path again.
Thanks
Ray

The Lakewood Police department evening and night shift officers on their township rounds should identify the malfunctioning poles with the pole id numbers and submit to the department. Police vehicles have flashing lights for safety, unlike the rest of us. JCP&L should be denied payment for non functional lights. Among numerous other lighting deficiencies, Madison Ave and 2nd Street intersection has 0 working street lamps. That is certainly a safety hazard
It’s not the LPD’s job to take inventory of street lights. They our not our butlers. They have a job which is complex with constantly changing roles.
I have a better idea. Hatzalah also has flashing lights for safety so why not ask them to do it?
Lakewood Police has a department called Traffic and Safety. Streetlights are part of that department. LPD officers are paid to protect the town, by patrolling the streets, when not attending an emergency. Monitoring streetlamps is, or should be included in the patrol duties. Flashing lights for self protection while doing the job of protecting the town is proper for a police officer. It is not proper for a volunteer or even paid ambulance service member to use their flashing lights , unless responding to an emergency
Anyone can put a magnetic flashing amber light on the roof or back of their car & safely do the same thing. Is that you I hear volunteering?
Yes, many lights need new bulbs. They’re doing it now. Someone said they were busy over the summer, and are now up to the bulbs.
