Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Left Turn Signals

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles

Is there a reason why approximately 5 or 6 intersections in Lakewood, have left turn lanes, but no left turn signals?

One of the two worst is County Line and the 9.
There’s a left turn lane but no signal.
Everyone likes to blame bad driving, inattentive during or lack of patience to be the cause many of the accidents.

Time will tell, but I see it as an infrastructure issue. For example, it takes forever to make a left turn on to the 9 from County Line, so drivers just jump the light when it’s red. If there was a left turn signal, I think it decreases significantly drivers jumping the light.

Also, in NY, at many intersections there’s when a light turns red all lights go red so all four lanes are red for let’s say 10 seconds. I’ve found that also decreases the number of accidents. It lets every driver that wants to blow past a light or just can’t stop time to clear the intersection reducing accidents.
Thanks for all you do for Lakewood. Keep up the good job.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Allan

You will get no argument from me. We have been requesting the state to install the turn arrows at both County Line and Kennedy for quite some time. They finally agreed to do it, now we are waiting for them to actually install them. We just sent a follow this past week.

Thanks for writing

Ray

    • The logic is it would be WAY WORSE without them.

You have received a response from The Gossage Reba, quite the honor for you sir.

      Gossage out!

  1. Rt. 9 and central, pine James and central, 9th and Madison turning on to Madison, 6th and Madison turning on to Madison. All need turning signals.

  2. Also the traffic lights along forest Ave. Need adjustments 14th and forest is too long on 14th should be longer green on forest, county and Kennedy in evenings can be a few minute wait between lights, also 7th and forest sometimes too long.

  3. There should be a left turn signal added at the new traffic light on prospect and Massachusetts. The left turning lane backs up traffic terribly during busy traffic.

  4. I’m not sure why it’s called ask the mayor, most of the questions are engineering related questions. The segment should be called ask engineering. Where the questions get asked to the civil engineering team that signs off on Lakewood’s infrastructure.
