Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Left turn arrows

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr. Coles,

I am making a suggestion that I am sure has been brought up many times. There are many intersections that have left turning lanes but no left turning arrow causing backed up traffic and making it very difficult for more than two or three cars to turn per light. Examples of such intersections are County Line Road turning onto Madison Avenue and James Street turning onto River Avenue. By just placing a turning arrow should mitigate a tremendous backup. During rush hour County Line Road travelling westbound is backed up to Monmouth Ave.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

S. H.

Response from Mayor Coles:

For the life of me, I cannot understand why we have been denied permission to install these left hand turn signals at these as well as at several other intersections. We have asked the state repeatedly for permission to upgrade these signals. We will continue to press the state to use a little common sense & make life a lot easier for our residents.

Thank you,

Ray

  1. For the life of mine I can’t understand why the township first approves developing before insuring that they will be able to perform the necessary infrastructure improvements to handle the new developments. Also can we please get the light by the gsp south exit by airport road fixed?? I kid you not, you can wait for three minutes by that light and it lasts enough time for four cars to go through. There is also a walk signal that is always green even though there are no sidewalks and it’s an industrial area..

  2. what about putting a left turning lane on Cedarbridge going toward Bricktown by clover.it would avoid alot of traffic and there seems to be plenty of room to do it

  3. Ray!! Keep it up, you are doing a terrific job.
Sometimes it takes Development for the proper improvements to be noticed and done.

  4. Abe, not sure what you’re referring to. There are left turn lanes and signals on County Line Rd at the Hope Rd intersection. There is no left turn signal from Hope onto County in either direction and shouldn’t be because there are very few cars coming out of the Cathedral Dr side onto the highway. The true problem with this intersection is all the people blowing through the red lights. The second problem is that people coming out of the south side of Hope Rd at the intersection have no idea how to maintain their lane of traffic. They immediately go to the passing lane so they could either turn onto Kent Rd or just keep going straight even though traffic law requires them to remain in the right lane unless passing.
